Chapparal Mallow
Found in parts of California from Baja to the northern California coast, this fast growing upright native shrub puts on quite a show in summer and fall.  The shrub's arching branches are covered with gray-green leaves and many silvery pink mallow-like flowers.   It grows rapidly anywhere to a well branched sturdy shrub from 4-12' tall by 4-6' wide but can be kept smaller with pruning.   It should be pruned back once a year in the fall to keep it from getting leggy.  It prefers full sun and low water but is tolerant of other garden conditions including some shade and moderate water.  Birds like this plant as a seed source and for nesting and cover in the dense foliage. Butterflies like it as a nectar source.  It is hardy in our area. You might try using it as an informal hedge or stand alone specimen against a fence.
