Plant of the week: Solidago 'Laurin' (Goldenrod)
Solidago 'Laurin' |
Solidago is a perennial which is popular in Europe and is becoming more recognized here. Its common name is Goldenrod which might give you a clue as to its appearance. At Markham, we have a fairly new variety available named 'Laurin'. This hybrid is a neat, compact (12" tall), vigorously growing variety of Goldenrod. Short strong stems are covered in tassles of golden yellow flowers from late summer through fall. Attractive to butterflies and bees and requiring low to moderate water, this late blooming perennial will make a strong impact in the garden. You might consider combining it with purple penstemons or salvias or with profusion white zinnias.
Editor's Note: Goldenrod often has a notorious reputation as the cause of allergies known as hay fever. However, it is now a well proven myth and that Ragweed blooming at the same time is the culprit and Goldenrod is just an innocent, and beautiful, bystander.
