Plant of the Week

Carpenteria californica
Bush Anemone

This evergreen shrub is native to a small area in Fresno County on the edge of the vast Central Valley. For such a restricted population, this plant is well travelled. Records have it growing in England since the beginning of the 20th century and possibly earlier.

Bush Anemone is an evergreen shrub with a mature height ranging from 6 - 12 feet. When established, the deep green leathery leaves create a dense screen and are tolerant of both frost and scorching heat. In the late Spring and early Summer, 2-3 inch wide white flowers appear in clusters contrasting vividly against the green foliage. The display can last 2-4 weeks after which a light pruning will encourage a fuller form.

In its native range, Bush Anemone grows in sheltered areas so give it a location where it receives a break from the hot afternoon sun. This reduces stress on the plant and the requirement for additional water.

A fine selection named 'Elizabeth' is the only cultivar in the trade at the moment. It is more compact and flowers more profusely than the species. Markham currently has this cultivar for sale in 2 gallon pots.
