Plants of the Week -- Low Growing Pastels
Lamium 'Pink Pewter'
Hard to believe that such a lovely little plant has the common name of Spotted Dead Nettle. The silvery leaves are edged with dark green and bring brightness to shaded spots in the garden. As if the foliage wasn't enough, this perennial has beautiful soft pink flowers from spring to midsummer. This lamium is tolerant of different moisture conditions but best in well drained soil with moderate, regular water. It grows vigorously to a height of about 6-8" and will spread to 12-24" making it a very good ground cover candidate in light to full shade. Also consider using it in hanging baskets and containers. Supposedly it is deer resistant. |
Campanula poscharskyana 'Blue Waterfall' (Serbian Bellflower) Cascading star shaped blooms in a lavender blue shade bring cool color to the garden for a long period from late spring to early fall.. The tight bell-like buds open to full blue stars with a white eye that cover the dark green, heart shaped foliage. It grows 8-10" tall and spreads to 2' wide by underground stems. It prefers partial sun with regular water to start but will tolerate some dryness once established. This plant's low spreading habit is ideal for tumbling over a wall, planting in a rock garden or along a path, or trailing over the sides of a container or window box. Shear the plant occasionally to keep it looking neat and tidy.
