Plants of the Week:
Achillea (Yarrow) These are tough, dependable, and abundantly flowering perennials for the water-wise garden. They range in size from low groundcovers to heaping mounds of typically ferny foliage. Blooms are flat top clusters of small daisy like flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, orange and red. Even when not in bloom, they are attractive as a ferny foliage ground cover. All like full sun. Require minimal care - cut back after blooming and divide clumps when they get crowded. They are drought tolerant when established but look better with some water. Attract butterflies and hummingbirds as well as beneficial insects such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps. At Markham we have several varieties of yarrow including: Moonshine This yarrow has deep lemon yellow flowers on 1-2 foot stems of silvery green foliage.
Pink Island A native yarrow from Santa Cruz Island. It has green foliage and bright pink flowers that fade to pale pink with age.
We also have a few plants of the following yarrows:
A. Tayegete A. Anthea A. 'Walter Funke' |
Yarrow as Medicine?
While we're not recommending you try this to cure your next ailment, Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), a California native, is part of a complex group of plants from around the northern and mountainous parts of the world that was used medicinally. The boiled leaves were applied as a poultice, to people and horses (collar boils). Yarrow contains anti-inflammatory compounds, helps clot blood faster, and can be used on wounds, and used in lotions. This info is from the Las Pilitas Nursery web site, a great source for native plants and information. |
