Plant of the Week:
Salvia clevelandii 'Winifred Gilman'
Salvia clevelandii 'Winifred Gilman'Salvia clevelandii is an evergreen shrub native to Southern California and Baja. One of the more outstanding and compact cultivars is 'Winifred Gilman'; it grows into a rounded shrub 3x3 feet tall and wide. This beautiful native has abundant deep violet colored flowers that come from dark ruby red bracts on maroon stems. It flowers on aromatic gray green foliage for about a month in early summer. The scent of foliage and flowers is distinctive and intense. S. 'Winifred Gilman' likes full sun and very good drainage. Occasional deep watering is ok but the plant will usually be fine with minimal supplemental irrigation.  Hardiness is variable; it may not survive temperatures below the low 20s F but could come back from these low temps if it has a well established root system. As is true for most native Salvias, this plant is attractive to hummingbirds.
