Keckiella cordifolia (California Native)Keckiella cordifolia
Keckiella is an evergreen sprawling shrub to 5 feet, spilling down walls and slopes. Red 1-2 inch flowers, which are attractive to hummingbirds, bloom during Spring and Summer. Add compost to clay soils to improve drainage. Best in partial shade with moderate to low water. Will drop leaves in Winter unless watered. Common names often given as Climbing Penstemon or Heart-Leaved Penstemon because of its resemblance to Penstemons.
Nemophila (California Native)
nemophila menziesii Nemophila is an annual that grows 6-12 inches tall by 1 foot wide. It grows in delicate mounds of fernlike, light green leaves which develop after Winter rains and are covered with blue or white flowers in Spring. Best in sun to part shade with good drainage. Let plants die down in the hot days of Summer; they will reseed freely where content.
Neophila menziesii, Baby Blue Eyes, has sky-blue flowers with white centers. Native to California and Southern Oregon. Available in 4" containers.
Leucanthemum x superbum (Shasta Daisy)
Shasta DaisyShasta Daisy is a useful perennial for Summer and Fall bloom. Grows to a height and spread of 2-3 feet with flowers held high above the foliage which grow to 3 inches across. Excellent as cut flowers; can be divided every 2 or 3 years. Developed by the famous plant breeder, Luther Burbank. Easy to grow.

Editor's note: ...almost a California native and one of the most dependable flowers in my garden.

Visit the Nursery This Winter

Some of us continue to volunteer at Markham Nursery during the cold winter months-except when the weather is truly miserable-which means we will be adding new plants to the beds each week. So, feel free to stop by. Volunteers are usually here on Tuesday morning from 9 until noon. If the weather is inclement, it is better to call ahead.

The Nursery is located at 1202 La Vista Avenue (off Clayton Road) in Concord (map). On Tuesday's you can drive all the way into the Nursery area. The office phone is 925-681-2968 or you can email to info@markhamarboretum.org.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
