A MORNING DRILL SESSION IN THE LIFE OF A CAMPER
9:00 Everyone is on the field and the conditions are perfect. The field is in great shape and our training session is being directed by 2 different college coaches.
9:00 - 9:30 The warm up was fun with lots of ball touches. I am definitely warm. The skills were difficult and I didn't expect to learn new moves while I was warming up.
9:30 Water break. Gatorade of all flavors and really cold. I needed that!!!
9:45 - 11:00 Today's session focused on playing quickly and making the simple choices. The coaches explained what we were working on and then got us going quickly. They were pretty demanding and I wasn't used to this level of play.
11:00 The session is over and I really learned a lot. Lots of touches, high work rate and I got more out of this session than any I get at home. I am looking forward to lunch. I have worked up a pretty good appetite.

RECRUITING THE STEPS TO TAKE
By Coach Getman
Now that you know that you need to be
thinking about college in your Sophomore and Junior year (in the March
Issue of "Whats A Blaze"), and you have created your list of colleges to
contact, (April Issue), and you know what to put in your resume, (May
Issue), and whether to send a DVD, here is another step. This should be one of the first steps you should take.
Ask your High School and Club Coaches
whether or not they think you are College material and what level team
they think you could make. There is a level for almost every High
School player that wants to play in College. There are levels by
Division and levels by how seriously the College pursues a winning
Soccer Team.
Then ask your Coach if he would contact the
College Coaches at the Colleges you are interested in. They can send a
quick email to those Coaches, letting them know of your interest and
describing your talents. And of course making themselves available to
answer any questions about you. If they personally know any College
Coaches, that can make the contact even more effective.
Your
High School and Club Coaches are a great resource, use them.
Read my step by step guide in the following newsletters and send in your questions. I will answer your questions and more in each edition.

Question and Answer by Coach Getman
I am interested in your keeper camp for my son. He is 15, a Sophomore in High School, and his desire is to be a college keeper. I am looking for some serious training for him during the summer break. I have checked on many different keeper camps and most seem to offer keeper training as an afterthought. Can you give me some idea of what your camp can do for my son in developing him? T.R. - Tenn.
Dear T. R. - Tenn.
We do offer high level training for keepers and we do it in a unique way. First, we have training sessions that involve small groups of keepers working with expert coaches. Because of your sons age, he would be working with my Goalkeeping Coach from UAB. Coach Joel Wallace is the top keeper coach in the country. He has coached 2 all-americans at UAB and last year our unheralded Sophomore keeper was named All-Region. I expect he will be All-American this coming fall. Coach Wallace is VERY high energy and pushes all our keepers to work even harder every day.
Our general format is: 90 minutes of Skill Training each morning followed by 30 minutes of work within a team setting. Each afternoon there are either full-sided games or small sided games. Goalkeeping coaches are with the keepers focusing on communication during the games as well as decision making. Each evening there is a full-sided game with GK coaches again behind the goals giving instruction.
We limit the number of Goalkeepers at each session of camp so that group sizes are small and there is a lot of individual attention. I am confident that our camp will provide an environment where your son will be both challenged and motivated.
The level of play at our Advanced Camp is very high. Many of the campers travel from all over the country to attend. Last year 13 of our UAB players were former campers. Because we have so many college coaches on staff, we have a high level of camper who is looking to be seen by college coaches.
Email your questions. Coach Getman will choose one to answer in each NEWSLETTER. info@uabsoccercamp.com
