Greetings! ,

"It's a sure sign of summer if the chair gets up when you do."

                                            ~ Walter Winchell

Decks often stand unused in this scorching hot, humid weather and pesky mosquitoes will often put an end to the hopes of an evening on the deck with a few friends and some good eats.

Perhaps best loved for beating the sun and bugs, screened porches are also an efficient way to gain more usable living space and easily enjoyed as more than just your summer space.

A past client of ours sent us this letter,

In the winter of 2009 the idea of a screened porch resurfaced again. I had thought about this often in the past, but when the economy tanked and a lot of my retirement fund disappeared, I gave up the idea. But, in the dark of winter, the wish came back. I kept thinking, "If I have to stay home more, why not make my home better?"

I took another look at my budget, applied for and obtained a home equity loan that I could manage and contacted Villa Builders. After several planning meetings the final design was completed. I scaled down a bit to stay within my budget, and Villa was very creative in keeping things most important to me in the design.

The screened porch was completed during the summer of 2009 and it is absolutely wonderful. I sat on it in the fall while leaves rustled and fell, stood on it and watched snow fall, entertained family and friends there in spring and summer. Best of all, I enjoy sitting and reading by lamplight while listening to the sound of falling rain. So, dear Villa Builders, I just wanted to tell you how happy I am with my lovely screened porch. Thank you for such good work.

            Sincerely,

           A very satisfied customer, Arlene.

Many thanks to Arlene and Nancy for sharing your screened porches with our community of friends and past clients.

Warmly,
Joanne

4 Design Tips

  1. Size: Get the maximum enjoyment by making the the overall size large enough to accommodate a seating area and a dining area.
  2. Electrical: You will want to have plenty of outlets along the perimeter to reduce tripping hazards from electrical cords.
  3. Ceiling fans: A little help for mother nature on those days and evenings when breezes aren't as plentiful.
  4. Skylights: Invite natural light into your screened porch. Plus, you will appreciate the additional light brightening the adjacent interior room.

Before & After

Along with a kitchen expansion, another big change for this family's home was the addition of a screened in porch where the family can enjoy outdoor dining without the backyard pests. With its new L-shaped layout, the owner, Nancy carved out a special enclave for herself---her "Zen corner"-a quiet seating area with wind chimes and a bubbling fountain where she can relax and enjoy her home's peaceful setting.

4 Decor Essentials

  1. All weather, comfortable furniture: Opt for furniture featuring upholstery that can withstand the elements. Your screened porch will provide shelter from the rain, but it won't keep away all rain.
  2. Area rugs: Outdoor carpeting will do a nice job at segregating your spaces and enhance the feeling of an actual living space.
  3. Plants: Either hanging, or on a pedestal, or simply placed in decorative pots will bring life and added beauty to your screened porch.
  4. Lighting: Incorporate table and or floor lamps. Be sure to use only lighting that is rated for exterior use. Indoor lights are a hazard used outside.
