Greetings! |
Namaste,
Your mind creates your reality. How's that working for you? Thoughts are like an apple tree. The beautiful fruit hanging there, that perfect red apple, IS at once, the past, the present, and the future. Where the apple tree was planted, what kind of growing conditions it has had, how much rainfall there has been, whether pesticides were sprayed on it or not, whether some compost was spread around it or not- all of the past is in the quality of the apple in this moment. Likewise, the quality of the apple in this moment determines the quality of apple trees, and therefore potentially thousands of apples, that will come after it, that will spring from its seeds.
So too your thoughts now are very much the confluence of the quality of your thousands of thoughts before. And, with nothing being altered, your thoughts now will greatly influence, if not determine, your future thoughts, and therefore your future reality.
Yoga says cultivate your ability to live in the fullness of the knowing of each moment as divine. As you do your yoga poses and breathing, you know that your body feels and functions better, now and in the future. As you chant and contemplate and meditate, you know that your mind feels and functions better, now and in the future.

Do You Have Metabolic Syndrome? |
One out of four Americans has Metabolic Syndrome.
If you have at least 3 of the following 5, you may have it.
-Waist Size: Women waist > 25" Men waist > 35"
-LDL Level: Women LDL < 50 Men LDL < 40
-Blood Sugar < 110
-Triglycerides > 150
-Blood Pressure: systolic 130 or higher; diastolic 85 or higher
Again, if you have at least 3 of 5 of these symptoms, you may have a metabolic syndrome-a malfunction that affects your health now with symptoms such as cravings, low energy, sleep disturbances, difficulty losing weight, and low immunity. And it can mean you are predisposed to develop even more serious disorders such as adult onset diabetes or heart disease. WHAT TO DO?
The really good news is that metabolic syndrome CAN be reversed through diet and exercise. All these markers listed above DO respond to lifestyle changes. But-and it's a big but- the changes necessary in both diet and exercise, while very simple, must be sustained day by day and over time. This syndrome did not come on suddenly and it doesn't go away overnight.
You must understand what is going on in your individual metabolism, and you must meet that imbalance with the types of food, and the timing of your food, as well as with the types of exercise, and the timing of that exercise, that will enable your body 1) to burn bodyfat for energy-particularly abdominal fat; 2) to regulate your insulin 3) to spare your muscle as an energy source, and; 4) to normalize your stress-handling hormones.
You can get started by measuring your waist. Come in with a cloth tape measure just above the level of your hipbones on each side. If your numbers are higher than 25 inches for women and 35 for men, your metabolic health may be out of balance. Keep a week's diet diary for yourself. This will begin to point you towards where and how your nutritional intake can be better balanced. And keep an exercise journal to track your consistency.

Pose of the Month - Pincha Mayurasana 2 (pin-cha my-your-AHS-anna) |
Pinca Mayurasana was one of the first arm balances I learned, after headstand. Forearm balance is easier to balance in because the foundation, the length of the forearms, is relatively large unlike handstand where the foundation is much smaller, the size of the hands. Balancing in this or any upside down position requires an integration of the core muscles. Our abdominal muscles connect the upper body and lower body together, so it is important that the abdominal muscles are awake and strong. How do we awaken the core muscles? Well, you could do crunches. Not very yogic, I suppose. More appropriate to a Pilates class perhaps. In yoga, try holding a high plank. You may think plank pose has a lot to do with arm strength, but if you hold it for 30 seconds or longer, you will find it to be an abdominal pose. In the beginning you may find that you do plank with your belly sagging or your hips lifting. That's because it is hard to hold a high plank with the body in one straight line. Have a friend take a picture of you in plank pose and see if your torso is in a straight line or not. Are your hips lifted like a tent? Or are they dropping like a hammock? Once you can hold a high plank, with your torso in a straight line, for 30 seconds to a minute you can rest assured you have enough abdominal integration to balance in Pinca Mayurasana. If you come into Forearm Balance and you find that you cannot get your head off of the floor, then it is not your abdominal muscles you need to strengthen, it is your shoulders and upper back that need to open. We'll talk about that next week. For now, work on that core! I'll see you in class! Karin
