February 2010 |
I asked Majolica dealer and friend of 13 years, Gayle Green, how she got her start...
Here's what she told me.....
My serendipitous adventure started when I bought a Majolica leaf shaped tray at a house sale. I had to think hard about buying it, the whole time thinking it was ugly. Somehow I knew it was majolica and had value, although I am not sure I could even pronounce the name correctly. Oh well, I needed more items to sell at an upcoming Antiques Show. I had never shown at an Antiques show before, but I was convinced that it was my calling. My excitement about the approaching event was building and hopefully I could turn my $12.00 investment into a profit.
To read the rest of Gayle's adventure
scroll to the bottom of the page. Gayle stands before"magic" Majolica.

Gayle Green's Adventure ( cont.)
Thus began my love affair with this vibrant, naturalistic pottery from the Victorian Era. I never planned on being a Majolica dealer, nor did I expect to have an unending passion for it. Majolica is a testament to every creature and plant on Earth and since I have always loved nature, it was the perfect pottery to focus my energy on. Do you remember how I had originally thought my first leaf was ugly? As I purchased my third piece, I quickly realized I thought Majolica was beautiful. I loved it so much I could not force myself to part with any piece I found. Majolica had cast its spell over me.
I have traveled widely over the past twenty-seven years, in constant search of the next fascinating Majolica form. It is not uncommon for me to have more than a hundred pieces of majolica for sale at a show. I am still finding design patterns I have never seen before. Victorian Majolica has been around for one hundred and sixty years and I expect my passion for it to be with me for the rest of my life.
Careful, Majolica might cast its spell over you!
Gayle Green lives in a sweet farm house in Glen Flora,Texas, with partner Roy, and pet cow Sweetpea, mini-donkey Romeo, cats Kitzy, Spooky, Baby, and Big Boy, 16 hens and a giant goldfish. | |
