Narrowing the Field:  From LOIs to Finalists for the 2012 Grants

The Impact100 grant process that began in January with volunteers reviewing 203 Letters of Inquiry has moved steadily forward over the past three months.  February saw the first round of Focus Area Committee meetings, when the 39 Full Proposal applications were distributed among 125 members who are participating on FACs.

In March, the FACs met again to discuss the merits of the proposals and select the organizations to receive a site visit.

Now, in April, we move into the final phase of review. Site visits began this week and continue throughout the month.  Member Cheryl Haze said that nothing compares to seeing a group first-hand. "Once, a group that looked weak on paper turned out to be a sparkling gem in person," she said. "I have admired many of the organizations I've visited, and my family and I have found ways to support these groups - by donating items they need or asking our family and friends to make a contribution to them in lieu of birthday gifts."

The final FAC meetings occur in early May, when members discuss and debate once more to determine the finalists for the Annual Meeting on June 4.

Throughout the grant process, eight women on the Financial Review Panel provide support to FAC members by evaluating applicants' fiscal stability and capacity to implement their proposed projects. FRP member Laurie Sherman said, "We don't want to over-emphasize our role; we're not necessarily looking for the strongest applicants. We're acting as a canary in the coal mine, pointing out significant red flags that might be a concern....A lot of groups are small and struggling to raise funds, and that's okay.  But we don't want to give our grant to an organization that is faltering."

This year's Annual Meeting is creating even greater anticipation than in the past since Impact100 will award two $100,000 project grants, along with three substantial operating grants.

Quote from a Member...

How do you decide to cast your vote?

"First of all, I think:  How much impact will Impact100 have on this organization?  I consider whether this project fills an unmet need.  I think about what our contribution will accomplish.  Look at WePAC from last year - they have taken off since receiving our grant!

"I haven't served on a FAC, but as we've grown, I think our members have become more and more experienced in evaluating proposals, and more and more efficient in the grant process."

Questions?

How does the Annual Meeting work?

The evening is roughly divided into three parts.  The first hour is an opportunity to gather, reconnect with friends, and get to know members you may not have had the chance to meet; the reception features a buffet and cash bar. The second hour focuses on the finalist presentations.  This is a rare privilege: The chance to hear directly from five outstanding organizations about their important work in the Philadelphia region and their proposed project for Impact100 funding.  The third hour is for the membership vote and the much-anticipated announcement of the grant recipients for 2012.

May I bring a guest?

Members are welcome to register and bring guests to the Annual Meeting. More information will be included in the invitation emailed on May 1.

What information will I receive in advance about the finalists?

Every member will receive an executive summary about each finalist organization and its proposed project, as well as the full grant proposal submitted by that applicant.

I won't be able to attend the Annual Meeting. May I still vote?

Absentee ballot information will be sent to members on May 23, along with the detailed information about each finalist.  Instructions about voting will be included; the deadline to submit an absentee ballot is June 1.

Please look for our next newsletter in May -- which will feature the announcement of Impact's five finalists for the 2012 grants!  Email us at info@impact100philly.org to share any feedback or questions, or if you would be interested in helping with future newsletters
