In two years, Impact100 has emerged from a fledgling handful of women to become a regional philanthropic success story, thanks in large part to Co-Founders Beth Dahle and Mary Broach. Their efforts will be rewarded when both are named New Generation Philanthropist of the Year on Nov. 18 at a celebration of people and organizations instrumental in improving their communities and the world.

The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP-GPC) recently announced that it will honor Impact along with seven other individuals or organizations on National Philanthropy Day on Nov. 18 -- its 25th year presenting Awards for Philanthropy.

"My first reaction was thrilled, but then honestly, I was a combination of thrilled and humbled," said Beth Dahle about the award. "It made me realize how much we had accomplished in just two short years. While Mary and I officially received this award, I know that this is an award for every one of us."

Mary Broach said, "I'm excited about the honor, especially as it will shed more light on the extraordinary work that Impact's grantees are doing in the region."  The Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness -- the 2009 Impact grant recipient --nominated Impact100 for the award.

The AFP-GPC received 11 additional letters in support of the nomination from Impact members, donors (or Friends of Impact), Impact's legal adviser, and grant applicants. The application required comprehensive background information on Impact, and the board thanks Wendy Peck, chair of Educational Programs, for writing a compelling narrative and shepherding the application through the process.

In addition to the award in November, Impact has learned that the AFP-GPC nominated Impact100 Philadelphia for an International Philanthropy award.  Those awards will be announced next spring and presented at the annual International Conference in Chicago. Gloria Pugliese, GPC president, said that AFP International encourages local chapters to nominate local National Philanthropy Day recipients for international awards. The chapter chose Impact100 Philadelphia for Award for Outstanding Foundation, she said.

"We felt this was the best fit, and that Impact100 Philadelphia would present a strong nomination from the chapter," she said in an email.

You can read more about this year's planned National Philanthropy Day and the 2010 award recipients at the AFP-GPC website. National Philanthropy Day will be celebrated this year at the Philadelphia Loews Hotel.

According to its website, AFP is a professional association of individuals and organizations that encourages philanthropy for an array of charitable causes and institutions. It was founded in 1980 and now has more than 30,000 members in 200 chapters worldwide. National Philanthropy Day "recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society."

Survey Finds Members are Satisfied and Engaged in Impact100 Mission

A survey of members in June found that they are invested financially and emotionally in the Impact100 mission. Many take part in committees, are satisfied with their experience thus far, and plan to renew their membership.

The online survey, which 63 members completed (45 percent of membersship), found the following:

  • Many are willing to contribute time and skills to the organization by serving on committees or in leadership roles.
  • Members especially like "leveraging their donation into a large collective grant" (75 percent of respondents rated this the top or second when asked what they like best about Impact).
  • Seventy percent of respondents plan to become involved in a nonprofit organization they learned about through Impact this year.

Respondents also suggested ways of improving Impact, including: Making the proposal review process more objective; targeting programs to the different levels of expertise of the members; and keeping Annual Meeting presentations short, balancing the emotional and technical aspects of proposed projects.

If you have comments to share but could not complete the survey, please email us at info@impact100philly.org. Thank you to members Karen Nathan and Abby Spector for analyzing and compiling the survey results.

We extend a warm thank you to Cheryl, whose term as Impact's first treasurer ended in June. Cheryl established and managed financial procedures, governmental filings and investment policies for Impact during its founding period, and was critical to the success of the first two years.

Thank you for reading.  As always, your commitment to Impact100 is deeply appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you in the fall.
