MINUTES OF MARCH 10 MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Meeting called to order at 6:40 p.m. by President, Kirby Schimmels. He introduced the 2009 Board:
Neal Stephenson - 1st VP, Administration & Programs
David Howard - 2nd VP, Facilities & Grounds
Kym Jump - Secretary
Monica Howard - Treasurer
Lisa Harman - Membership
Rhonda Reese - Swim Team
Janet McLeod - Parliamentarian
Neal Stephenson reported on success of off-season activities, November Night Out and December Game days and how we were working to include activities to make SORA a year-round facility. One member commented that the lifeguards need to have the authority to send children home from the pool that are misbehaving and that all children who are under age 9, must always be accompanied by an adult.
David Howard reported on work that was done in off-season to keep pool in proper working condition. He also mentioned issues with baby pool and operational needs that must be addressed before opening season. A member cited their concern that the baby pool must be operating because it is first thing many prospective members see and the importance of having a working facility.
Lisa Harman reported that the last few years our memberships have decreased, making this year very important in increasing pool memberships. Lisa also reported that we are offering (5) scholarships to needy families this year and if anyone has a family to nominate, please let her know. There will be a form posted on the website. Lisa also reported that we have been working on the final 501(c)3 application and are near getting approval for the Swim Team to be a not-for-profit.
Rhonda Reese reported that plans are underway for the 2009 swim season. Two coaches this year are Lucy Pegues and David Howard. There will be a total of 4 meets, 2 at SORA and 2 offsite. Meet of Champs location is yet to be determined as the Natatorium is under renovation.
Monica Howard reported on the financial affairs of SORA giving a detailed analysis of 2008 actual expenses compared to 2009 expected expenses. Her report also included an analysis of major projects to be completed and the cost of each (i.e. repair of outer perimeter fence, tennis courts, volleyball area, playground, etc).
President Schimmels announced that Monica Howard would be resigning her position as Treasurer of the SORA Board to become Treasurer of the newly created Swim Team Board (once the 501(c)3 was completed). Given this vacancy on the board, President Schimmels asked for hands of those interested in filling the role of Treasurer. No one having volunteered, President Schimmels announced the SORA Treasurer as a vacant position to be filled.
President Schimmels recognized the efforts of Kym Jump, Secretary, for keeping minutes of all Board and Membership Meetings and handling any communications sent to membership. He also recognized Janet McLeod for her service as Parliamentarian and keeping order at these meetings.
President Schimmels then opened the floor for comments and suggestions. The following comments were made by members:
Jason Hugele asked for clarification of a 501(c)3 and the stockholder / associate memberships
David Slattery asked if he or other businesses could advertise at the pool and if the pool would benefit from his donation/advertisement
Bill Reese mentioned the idea of selling a part of the land to create more income for the association.
Gayle Hill cited her concern about the baby pool not being operable.
Lisa Slattery noted that due to the economy, many people will be vacationing at home this year, better known as "staycations" and this should help us in increasing pool memberships.
President Schimmels mentioned that May 1 is the deadline for current membership dues. Membership Applications are available on the website. We also can accept credit card payments on the website via a new PayPal service. New this year, receive a $50 Visa Gift Card when you refer a new family to the pool.
