November 2010
Men of Harvest Barrie,

As we have been going through our study of the book, "Respectable Sins" we got into a discussion about our role in Sanctification. There continues to be lots of discussion about what is God's work and what is mine. Obviously God isn't doing this work without my involvement. His work is in me! While I am completely dependent on the Holy Spirit to make progress, we are sometimes confused about what that would look like or how it would affect me. I recently came across this quote from the book "For the Love of God". D.A. Carson says...

"People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, and obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated."

Our goal is to stop the drift! We have been working together to do that and God has blessed us with greater desire for him, for holiness and for impact on our world. But we are not finished yet!

With that in mind, I'm excited to tell you about some of the things that God is doing in our Men's Ministry. God has raised up a new brotherhood of men at Harvest in and through whom he desires to do great things. As you read on about some of the things that are happening, we invite you to come and be a part.

Men's Breakfast - November 13, 7 a.m.

Come join us for breakfast on Saturday, November 13 at 7 a.m. at Timothy Christian School, 750 Essa Road in Barrie. This will be a great time of connecting together over a hot breakfast, spending some time in worship, hearing stories of God at work in the lives of some of the men at Harvest, and discovering how you can be a part of the greater things that God has in store for the Harvest men. Breakfast is being provided by Unity Christian High School as a fundraiser.  Cost is a donation to the school.

Get your ticket at the Men's Ministry table on Sunday or contact the church office.

Men's Small Groups

At the core of the Harvest Men's Ministry are men's small groups. We presently have four men's small groups in various locations around Barrie.

Each of these groups are currently studying the book Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate by Jerry Bridges which addresses the theme of holiness, and a dozen clusters of specific "acceptable" sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves - such as jealousy, anger, pride, unthankfulness, and judgmentalism.

Groups are meeting:

  • Mondays, 7 p.m. - at 480 Ferndale Dr. N.
    (starting Nov. 15)
  • Tuesdays, 6:30 a.m. - at Grove Park Home (234 Cook St.)
  • Wednesdays, 6:30 a.m. - at Grove Park Home                (234 Cook St.)
  • Thursdays, 6:30 a.m. - at 45 Ottaway Ave.

Come join us as we get into the trenches of our own battles with sin and find hope in the profound mercy of the gospel and the transforming grace of God as the means to overcome our subtle sins.

For more information or to sign up, email the Men's Ministry.

Well, that's it for now.  See you there!

You are loved!
