Men of Harvest,

I was reading recently the story of God's deliverance of Israel from their bondage in Egypt. After the incredible demonstration of his power at the Red Sea, God led his people into the wilderness providing for their daily needs. Yet Exodus 17 tells us that as the people went, they encountered an enemy in Amalek who came against them.

As Joshua and the army went down to face Amalek in battle, Moses stood at the top of the hill looking down. The story goes on to say that, "Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hand grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun" (Exodus 17:11-12, ESV).

What struck me as I read this story was that while for a time Moses was able to do it by himself, eventually he became weary and tired, and could not go on. It was only when Aaron and Hur came alongside Moses to support and strengthen him that Moses was able to fulfill his mission and see the people of Israel succeed in battle.

How true is that for us as men seeking to faithfully follow Jesus! Our walk with Christ and the mission that he has called us to is not one we can engage in by ourselves. For a time we might be able to get it done by ourselves. But, like Moses, eventually we will become weary and tired and be unable to go on. It is only when we have faithful brothers in Christ who come alongside us to encourage us and strengthen us that we might be effective in our mission and our faith in Jesus long term.

With that in mind, I'm excited to tell you about some of the new things that God is doing in our Men's Ministry. God is raising up a new brotherhood of men at Harvest in and through whom he desires to do greater things. As you read on about some of the things that are happening, we invite you to come and be a part.

Men's Breakfast - March 6

breakfast and bible on tableCome join us for a free breakfast on Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 a.m. at Timothy Christian School, 750 Essa Road in Barrie. This will be a great time of connecting together over a hot breakfast, spending some time in worship, hearing stories of God at work in the lives of some of the men at Harvest, and discovering how you can be a part of the greater things that God has in store for the Harvest men.

Men's Small Groups

group of Harvest menAt the core of the Harvest Men's Ministry are men's small groups. Beginning the week of March 7 to 13, we will be launching three men's small groups in various locations around Barrie.

Each of these groups will be studying the book Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate by Jerry Bridges which addresses the theme of holiness, and a dozen clusters of specific "acceptable" sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves - such as jealousy, anger, pride, unthankfulness, and judgmentalism.

Groups will be meeting:
  • Tuesdays, 6:30 a.m. - at Grove Park Home (234 Cook St)
  • Wednesdays, 6:30 a.m. - at Grove Park Home (234 Cook St)
  • Thursdays, 6:30 a.m. - at The Creative Space (89 Dunlop St. East, Suite 201)
Come join us as we get into the trenches of our own battles with sin and find hope in the profound mercy of the gospel and the transforming grace of God as the means to overcome our subtle sins.

Well, that's it for now.  See you there!

You are loved!
