Slow Food BBQ 2011

Bring on the bluegrass! The Quivira wine! And most of all, the sumptuous slow food from Sorrento Grille's Ryan Adams!

Slow Food OC invites Slow Food members and nonmembers alike to its third annual summer barbeque featuring a barbeque chicken dinner, live music by 5 Star Band, opportunity drawing, and guest speaker A.G. Kawamura, Former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Bommer Canyon was the cattle camp for the Irvine Ranch and is generally not open to the public at large. This is a special opportunity for all of us to enjoy a quality meal in a beautiful outdoor environment.

Dinner will be prepared by Chef Ryan Adams of Sorrento Grille in Laguna Beach and Slow Food Orange County volunteers.

Spring Work Day in Jerome Park CommUnity Garden

Giving back while getting greener!

Once again, volunteers from Slow Food Orange County gave back to the community in the Jerome Park CommUnity Garden in Santa Ana on May 14.  SFOC donated funds to purchase a small greenhouse and shelving for the garden so the folks from the Grain Project will have a space to start seedlings!  Volunteers moved raised beds and cleared the way for the new greenhouse, which was put together in no time at all.

When the work was finished, everyone enjoyed a meal (featuring garden produce) together in the beautiful setting.

This kind of community involvement is central to the Slow Food movement and we hope you can join us in an upcoming outreach event!

Learn the Slow Life in Diamond Bar

The Growing Home and Learning Center Opens With Workshops, Potlucks & More

The Growing Home and Learning Center is a brand-new sustainable education center based in Diamond Bar, CA. Run by a mother-son duo passionate about growing their own food and reducing their impact on the environment, The Growing Home strives to be a center of community and learning. Workshops start this summer and include permaculture, food fermentation, natural building techniques, and beekeeping. They'll also regularly host potlucks, film screenings, and speakers. The Growing Home and Learning Center is not sponsored by Slow Food OC, but both organizations support the common mission of sustainable living.

Please join them for their Grand Opening celebration on June 24th, where they'll be giving tours of their gardens (including 40 fruit trees!) and sharing their love for food.  For more info, check their schedule below or visit the Growing Home website.

Tustin Street Fair & Chili Cook-off!

Tustin Chili Cook-offOn June 5, Slow Food Orange County took on the Tustin Chili Cook-Off! In an exhilarating day, a team of Slow Food volunteers prepared seven gallons of International Chili Society-regulated chili for the judges and the lucky few festival attendants who got a sample. Passersby stopped by the booth regularly to see when they could get a taste as the fantastic smell of our chili, featuring grassfed beef and vegetables purchased at the farmer's market, wafted over the crowd. For a frantic hour, all of the chili was given out gratis and the response was tremendous.

Although we did not take home a trophy, we did recieve accolade after accolade about the high quality and terrific taste of our product, and we spread the Slow Food word to a huge new audience. Thanks are in order to our terrific team of Brian Seveland, Linda Elbert, Roger McErlane and Ted Wright, who spent countless hours perfecting our recipe, shopping, prepping vegetables and chilis, and cooking for a live audience!
