Classroom Connection
Promote Reading
through Podcasts
Malissia Bell a librarian at Brandeis Elementary School uses podcasts to promote reading. She gave students the opportunity to share about a favorite book to get students involved in reading. The program was designed to also get older students to teach younger students how to use technology. The program started with the fifth grade but soon captured the community. | Define Your Space!
Research consistently has found that students in organized and structured classrooms demonstrate more on-task behavior and higher academic achievement. (Heflin & Alberto. 2001) An organized classroom area with defined space can assist a student in successful completion of tasks that the student is requested to perform independently. There are two concepts to consider when organizing your classroom:
1-Create clear physical and/or visual boundaries to help students know where each area begins and ends. The staff need to identify the different areas and decide how the areas relate to the curriculumn, age level and what activities will occur in that space. This helps to clarify the expectations and give powerful cues for appropriate behavior. The areas need to be clearly defined with visual clues such as dividers, taped off areas, labeled markers, fabric or color coding. After establishing each area the students need to be taught how to move through the classroom space and what the expectations are for each segmented area.
2-Minimize auditory and visual distractions. When information is presented in an orderly fashion and not cluttered, the level of learning is clearing much higher. The decision of what information is posted on classroom walls and determining if what is posted is relevant to the class activity is necessary. Reduce the amount of stimuli and you may reduce the amount of distraction. Some districations can be easily covered with fabric, cardboard or moved to a better location. It is important to establish organizational systems in the classroom at the beginning of the year and teach students how to use them. Designating clear locations for specific materials such as homework, notes home, school supplies and personal items is helpful, as well as creating routines for assignment turn in.
Organization needs to be continually evaluated. As needs and expectations change within a classroom, so to must the organizational structure be adjusted. However, if you have created a consistent, organized, structured environment at the beginning of the year, then it will be easier to make smaller adjustments as necessary.
Classroom Architect allows you to layout your classroom floor plan before you physically move items in your room. It is a great first step to get your classroom ready for learning...
If you have an idea that may help other teachers define their space, send your suggestions to seatsack@seatsack.com.

~Organization is not an option, it is a fundamental survival skill and distinct competitive advantage.~
Pam N. Woods
The first steps of getting organized are not always easy, but the rewards can be substantial. It is clear that students benefit from a clearly defined and well organized classroom layout and system. It has also been proven that the development of organizational habits travel with students not only through school, but also into their careers helping them to be successful at every level.
Sincerely,
