Armored Home Inspections, LLC Newsletter
Greetings!
Many would say our home is our castle. But I take a more basic view of where we dwell, I view our homes as modern day caves with one primary function, and that is; to provide us with shelter from the outdoor environment. With this idea in mind, I would like to share some thoughts with you, as many are making plans for the 2012 calendar year, and are determining what they would like to accomplish around their homes. |
|
Your Home's Exterior
The exterior of your home protects you from hostile environments, pests, and predators. So it's obvious that the better the condition of your home's exterior, the better you will be protected from these undesirable conditions. |
Branch Punctured Roof |
While looking around your home, be watchful for encroaching tree limbs. Tree limbs can cause damage to the structure's exterior finish material such as siding, and roofing material. Keeping the tree limbs cut back 5-10 feet is recommended. Tree limbs in close proximity to the dwelling can provide a platform from which squirrels or other rodents can gain access to the homes attic area. Once inside, they can do significant damage as they gnaw on your roof's framing members. They can also disturb insulation and damage electrical wiring. So it's important to keep tree limbs and branches a safe distance away from the structure. Tree limbs can also cause roof damage if allowed to get too big and then hang precariously over your home. This scenario can easily turn into a homeowner nightmare. Last year we had some storms that toppled very large trees in my area of Delaware county. You won't believe the damage a large tree can cause to your home if it is too close. The damage shown above, was caused by only a medium sized tree branch.
You should also maintain your shrubbery at least a 12" away from the exterior. The primary reason for this is to maintain clear visibility of the building's exterior. You don't want to provide shelter for insects to gain access to the home undetected. You want to be able to see if there are openings in the exterior siding that have been made or mud tubing that has been constructed to penetrate the home. Far too many homes are found with planters and shrubbery planted too close to the home's foundation. | Shrubbery and plants should be kept off of house | The home's windows, doors, and trim should be well maintained. While this adds to the home's curb appeal, it has another practical purpose. By maintaining the caulking/sealant at the windows and doors, you help prevent water and insects from finding their way into the dwelling. This sealant when properly maintained also reduces air/energy loss. Don't underestimate the power of paint. It also is not just to add beauty to your home, it has a more practical purpose. It is primarily designed to protect the home's exterior components from water and the sun's UV rays. Without a good coating of paint on the trim and exterior framing, the elements would make quick work toward deteriorating these components. Sooner than you know it deteriorated wood trim would allow water to pass through and into your home.
Yes, there is much to think about in the year ahead, but I urge you while you are contemplating your spring and summer projects, take a close look around your home's exterior and take that extra step to help your home help protect you. As always if there is any advice that I can provide, or additional questions which I can answer, feel free to reach out to me
