Greetings!

Happy Spring from North Bridgton!  Just two short weeks ago, students were eager to leave the most recent snowfall behind, heading for warmer climates to enjoy a couple of weeks of Spring Vacation.  The Class of 2012 returned to no snow on the ground and record breaking warm temperatures, looking as though nature is signaling that a long winter is once again over. The fourth quarter of classes has started, and many exciting things are happening here on campus.

We hope you enjoy the most recent news from North Bridgton...

Alumni & Parent Gathering at Portsmouth BreweryFor the second year in a row, Bridgton Academy will host a gathering in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Scheduled for Thursday, April 12th beginning at 5:30 PM, this event will be held at the Portsmouth Brewing Company in their LaPanza Lounge.  If you are in the area, we would love to have you join us for a great evening with fellow Wolverines from the New Hampshire area, as well as BA faculty old and new!   Located at 56 Market Street in Portsmouth, convenient parking is just a few minutes away in the High-Hanover Parking Garage,  If you would like to attend or have any questions, please contact Michelle Cross in the Alumni & Development Office at 207-647-3322, ext. 1229 or email alumni@bridgtonacademy.org.  We hope to see you there!

2012 Ice-Out Contest - In a longstanding Bridgton Academy tradition, it's that time of year again to guess when the ice will go out of Long Lake.  Send us your best estimate of the date and time that the last floe of ice will leave Long Lake.  The closest guess will win a BA Wolverine Hoodie, so submit your entries to alumni@bridgtonacademy.org before Friday, March 23rd at 4:00 PM. Hurry, before it's too late!

Nice Time at Winter Parents' Visit Day - An enthusiastic group of  parents, grandparents, and siblings joined their Wolverines on Monday, February 20th for Bridgton's first Winter Parents' Visit Day.  Some guests arrived on Sunday, sharing dinner in the Dining Hall, followed by a Dessert Reception at Headmaster Vigneau's home.

Although Monday was a typical cold Maine winter day, the sun was shining brightly, and perfect for parents to travel around campus as they enjoyed the opportunity to attend classes.  Many reported how rewarding it was to see their sons actively participating in class discussions, giving presentations, and simply just seeing them in an academic setting.

A host of third quarter BA experiences were opened up to parents on Monday afternoon.  Some chose to play three vs. three hockey, and others enjoyed making candy.  For those who didn't mind braving the cold, there was ice fishing, or yoga and candlepin bowling for anyone who preferred to be indoors.

We would like to thank all who traveled to Bridgton and helped to make this event a success.

Headmaster's Holiday Enjoyed by All - Just before Study Hall was scheduled to begin on the evening of Wednesday, February 23rd, students were called to a special chapel. Not knowing what to expect, the tone quickly changed as Headmaster Vigneau announced a Headmaster's Holiday in effect for that evening and all of the following day. The chapel soon erupted in applause with students celebrating a break from their normal routine - a day of no classes, sleeping in, and most of all, fun!

Students and teachers alike greatly enjoyed this class-free day, which proved to be a welcome respite during the countdown to Spring Vacation.

Baby Boom Continues at Bridgton - Two more babies have been added to the Bridgton Academy community, bringing the total this past year up to five!

Trustees Evaluate Needed Facility Upgrades

March Board Meetings - As students were diligently finishing up third quarter classes and eagerly preparing for Spring Vacation, members of the Bridgton Academy Board of Trustees traveled to campus in the midst of a New England snowstorm for Board Meetings.   The emphasis of the most recent meetings was on facilities, as the Board works to further strengthen the Academy.

With two trustees completing their tenure this past fall, two new trustees were welcomed to the board for the March meeting as well.  Mrs. Carol Hamblet, a retired educator, lives in St. Mary's, Georgia, and summers in nearby Casco, Maine. Residing in Portland, Maine, Mr. Jeffory Begin is the President of Norton Insurance Company. Their knowledge and expertise have already proved to be valuable assets to our Board of Trustees.  Board President Bob Bogan '83 brought the meeting to order.

BA Staffers Travel to Massachusetts - While students were away on Spring Vacation, members of the Development Office and Headmaster Grady Vigneau decided to take a day to travel south - as least as far as Newburyport, Massachusetts, home of The Park Lunch.  This fabulous hometown-style restaurant is owned and operated by Bridgton alumnus Mike Doyle '67, and boasts out-of -this world fried clams! It was the perfect day to enjoy spring-like weather, great food, and the company of a few Bridgton alumni, with trustees Kevin Jones '81 and Tim Armour '67 joining the group for lunch. Thank you to Mike for hosting such a wonderful time!  If you visit The Park Lunch, be sure to say "hi" to Mike and check out the BA banner hung with pride over the bar.

Former Bridgton Coach Tom McCabe '72 Retires - In 1979, alumnus Tom McCabe first joined the Bridgton Academy coaching staff after an impressive football and lacrosse career at Springfield College.  In addition to working in the Bridgton Development Office, Tom coached both the  football and lacrosse teams.   He eventually became the Head Football Coach, earning a 20-10-2 record.  His role as Head Lacrosse Coach produced an equally impressive record of 56-5, with undefeated seasons in 1987 and 1990.

On March 31st, Bowdoin College will host a dinner and reception in celebration of his career. Upon retirement from coaching, Tom and his wife, Pat are planning to join the Peace Corps.
Hypnotist Dan LaRosa Entertains at BA - The week before vacation the Class of 2012 gathered for a special evening chapel.  Dean of Community, Residential, and Student Life Adria Carr teamed up with Headmaster Grady Vigneau to bring comedy hypnotist Dan LaRosa to campus.  The evening was full of entertainment that included horse races, dance solos, speeches on the importance of drinking water, and more.  Everyone on campus enjoyed the show, so we put together a few highlights for you to enjoy as well!

Spisso Sets New Record at BA- Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) is a unique student at Bridgton Academy (ME).  As a second year student at a one year school, Director of Admissions Chris Webb stated, "Marco embodies the characteristics that make a campus community better.  I knew that Marco would help to shape the direction and character of

our entire school (in a positive way) - from our students to our staff.  He has not disappointed."

In his second year at Bridgton, Spisso has found great success.  He was named captain of the Jr. A hockey team and in his two seasons has recorded 20 goals and 45 assists.  However, the most impressive stat is one that no other hockey player at Bridgton Academy has, or may ever, achieve.  This past weekend Spisso played in his 100th game for Bridgton Academy.  It is his hard work and determination that makes Spisso unstoppable, and this feat is just one of many in his future career. Congratulations Marco!!

Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) scored five minutes into the game with an assist from Billy Smith (Boston, MA). Middlesex has a close shot bouncing off the post, which BA collected and took down the ice. Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) took a shot, which bounced over the goalie to take a 2-0 lead. Of the next face-off McKeown extended the lead as he scored with help from Evan Gray (Norwell, MA). As MCC took a penalty shortly after, Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) worked the puck in front of the net for a well-placed wrist shot. A few minutes later Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA) took a shot from the point, which Steve Trychon (Sterling, MA) tipped in for Bridgton's next goal. MCC finally netted a goal to get on the scoreboard, followed by Charny's second goal of the night assisted by Johnny Sheil (Narragansett, RI). Jr. A Earns Hard Fought Win Over NSA- The Jr. A team took the ice for what promised to be a close, hard fought game against the National Sports Academy (NSA). For the first period, play was evenly matched, remaining scoreless until the last two minutes of the period. With NSA in the penalty box, Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, MA) and Colin Edwards (Winchester, MA) exchanged passes in front of the net before Edwards tallied the first goal of the game for BA.

The second period was played in a similar style to the first. The play was back and forth and it seemed as if BA would hold their 1-0 lead heading into the third. With one minute on the board, NSA snuck a goal past BA goaltender Jordi Vaan Gaal (RyMenam, Belgium) to tie things up. BA was still looking to hold the lead at the end of the second, as Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) netted a rebound off a shot from the point taken by Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA).
