Greetings!

Happy 2012 from all of us at Bridgton Academy! It's been a little while since the last e-news so we have plenty of new stories to share from North Bridgton. The Class of 2012 returned to campus last week, and after some creative re-orientation activities, are well into their second semester classes. The BA Rec Skiing program started this week at Shawnee Peak, with many students taking advantage of the nearby mountain. Although the snow is still light in Bridgton, the temperatures have certainly returned to normal for Maine - topping out in the single digits for most of the weekend. We hope you all enjoyed the holiday season!

And now on to some of the recent news from North Bridgton...

Students and Staff Enjoying BA Experience Program -

Cooking Club

When Adria Carr accepted the position of Dean of Community, Residential and Student Life
,one of her first goals was to enhance the residential life experience for the young men of Bridgton Academy. A big step towards this goal was Mrs. Carr's introduction of the BA Experience Program, which began earlier this Fall. BA Experiences are quarter-long activities led by various faculty members that meet every Wednesday involving students in all types of activities ranging from art to community service, outdoor activities, fitness, and beyond.

Over the first two quarters, students participated in over a dozen activity clubs. The second semester BA experiences started this week, with more new offerings on tap including yoga with the interns, ice fishing, painting, candy making, dog walking, restaurant critiquing, and much more.

Some highlights from the first semester include the Food Pantry Group, who worked to raise money for the local food pantry in the town of Bridgton. The students started by placing a jar for leftover change in the Wolverine Den. As they witnessed how quickly the change accumulated, the group decided to purchase and sell black Wolverine wrist bands. By the end of the second quarter, they were able to send nearly $250 to the Food Pantry just in time for Christmas.

The Cooking Club provided some young men with their first opportunity to try their hand in the kitchen. The group started with Homemade Pizza - they each made their own pie and all decided it was the best pizza they'd ever had. The students moved on to "no bakes" and were amazed at what they could make without an oven! They explored Chicken Caesar Salad - from scratch - and mastered the coddled egg along the way.

One of the most exciting sessions to witness was the 'Stir Fry' session with fried rice and lo mein. Josh Berry, an Executive Chef for The Balsams (NH) and his Chef Cuisine, Chris Harmon, came and took over the kitchen. They arrived in their chef whites and presented a very professional cooking class. Our young men were riveted to each piece of the hands on demonstration. Although they learned basic knife skills and made a mighty fine stir fry with fried rice, which they completely devoured, the heart of the demonstration was weaved with life lessons and many other educational elements: English, French, math, science, history and culinary knowledge, not to mention the expertise and skill required plus the passion and the love of it all. It was a magical afternoon with some fine young men.

Class of 2012 Participates in Re-Orientation -
Following a few weeks of much deserved holiday vacation, members of the Class of 2012 returned to North Bridgton on January 9th to begin the second semester. Before classes started last week, the students and advisors participated in an afternoon of group activities. One challenge was to build a tower made of spaghetti. Teams had a roll of tape, twine, and scissors to help with the effort. In addition, advisor groups participated in a "Sherpa Trek" where one student led his group on a journey around the gym. The caveat being that everyone in the group had to walk with their eyes closed. Pictured is Mr. Lebel and Mrs. Katz's advisory group with their completed spaghetti structure.
Admission Office Completes Major Recruiting Road Trip - Over the winter break, close to a dozen of BA's coaches and admissions staff blanketed the northeast, visiting over 150 high schools during early January recruiting for the Class of 2013. Referred to as the Boston Blitz, this recruiting effort is now in its third year and has proved very successful for Bridgton.

Since the holiday season, admission activity has picked up dramatically.  According to Director of Admission Chris Webb, 2012 is on track to be a banner year.  To date, the Admission Office has received over 200 applications.

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day twenty-five families visited campus. The prospects received student guided tours, and took part in group information sessions where they were able to hear faculty and coaches talk about the Bridgton experience.
If you know of a young man who would be a good candidate for Bridgton Academy, please reach out to us! Email cwebb@bridgtonacademy.org or call (207) 647-3322.
2005 Wolverine Victor Cruz Advances to NFC Championship - When Vic Cruz attended Bridgton Academy in the fall of 2004, some of his football teammates called him "Jelly" for his ability to leave defenders in a lurch. After completing his fall semester, Cruz went on to enroll early at the University of Massachusetts, ultimately getting drafted by the New York Giants in 2010. Cruz has gone on to have a storybook season with the Giants, racking up 82 regular season receptions for 1,536 yards - setting a new franchise record for NY. In last weeks playoff match-up against the Packers, Cruz pulled in some clutch first down catches, and also recovered an onside kick. The BA community and students have had a blast cheering on Cruz this season. Best of luck to Vic as the Giants take on the 49's in this weekend's divisional championships.

As Usual, Great Memories at Alumni & Parent Hockey Game -
For the seventh year in a row, Bridgton's Ice Arena was the home of the Annual Alumni and Parent Hockey Game in December. Holding true to tradition, it was the black team versus the white team, but this game proved to be a much different than past years. Joe Daley '77 played the net for the black team, while Tony Greely '96 took care of the white team. Both goalies blocked numerous shots, sometimes showing off some pretty impressive athletics. The score was back and forth throughout both periods with some classy moves and a few hat tricks thrown in to keep the game exciting. Fans were left biting their nails as the game came to a close with a tie score, leaving a shoot-out to decide the winner. For the first time in a few years, the black team finally pulled ahead with Jimmy Olson '99 sending the puck into the net and sealing a 13-12 victory.

Two members of this year's class and captains of Bridgton's Hockey A and Hockey B teams, Marco Spisso and Cory Durkin officiated the game with teacher Peter Gately emceeing.

Following the game, players and faculty congregated at the Wolverine Den to share dinner and company. It was great time to relive the highlights of another memorable and fun hockey match. Coach Jon Lounsbury shared a few words about the Wolverine hockey program, with Director of Annual Fund Jessica Priola concluding the evening. Thank you to all who came out to play, making this another successful alumni event!
