First Alumni Lacrosse Game Gets Snowed Out! - No one would have dreamed when the First Annual Alumni Lacrosse Game was scheduled for October 29th that there would be snow to contend with - not just snow showers, but a classic Nor'easter that dumped over 2 feet of snow in some parts of New England!  Over 30 alumni had made plans to play in the game.  Even with the snow, about 20 still showed up at Wilton High School in Wilton, CT ready for lacrosse!  The decision was quickly and easily made to move the event to O'Neill's Pub in nearby Norwalk, the intended location for the post-game gathering, just a few hours earlier than originally planned.

For many in attendance, it was the first time some had seen fellow classmates in over 10 years!  The afternoon was a great time of conversation and typical Bridgton camaraderie.   There were also some special guests joining the group, including Leon Harriman, Bridgton's first lacrosse coach who introduced the program in the Spring of 1967.  Another memorable coach in the lacrosse program was the late Mike Fuller, and it was a special touch to have his wife Gina present with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sheridan.

Others who braved the elements to come to this event were Ben Flory '99, Austin Sanders '99, David Klausner '99, Dave Breza '97, David Matz '01, Shaun Graham '98, Josh Olson '97, Chris Lynch '97, Rob Wood '98, Scott Kukis '05, Patrick White '08, Billy Mason '08, Nicholas Jez '08, Isaac Schafrath '99, Shaun Reilly '00, Michael Vail '06, Troy Bamann '00, Matt Hay '10, Chris Ames '10, and current Bridgton lacrosse coach Garrett Bamann '00.  Those traveling to Connecticut from Bridgton included Tucker Prudden, Chad Parker, Brian Farrell, Grady Vigneau, and Tom Austin.

When it was time to take the group photo, the comment was made, "This is Wolverine weather!  We need to go outside for this."  One more memory was made as they all posed amidst the falling snow.  This event will be scheduled again for next October, and we can be almost 100% positive that it will not snow again next year!  Stay posted for details in the coming months regarding the Second Annual Alumni Lacrosse Game!

BA Welcomes Three Beautiful New Additions To The Community! - In just a short span of one month, the Bridgton Academy community has grown.  Three faculty members and their spouses welcomed new babies during the month of October.

Ice time begins at 2pm, with face-off beginning at 2:30 pm.  After the game, join us in the new Wolverine Den for a post-game dinner.  Beginning at 7pm, watch Bridgton's Junior A team play against Rothesay Netherwood.

This is always a fun event, so be sure to bring your family and friends along.  If you plan to attend, RSVP to Michelle Cross in the Alumni Office by Tuesday, November 29th.   Email mcross@bridgtonacademy.org or call (207)647-3322, ext 1229.  We look forward to seeing you on the ice!
Several Alumni Participate in "Ched" Talks - Recently, the Class of 2012 has had the opportunity to hear from several alumni in our newest Chapel venue.  Chapel Educational Discussions (Cheds) are designed for our students to hear speakers who can share stories and experiences that engage our students in thought, and later discussion, of values, personal narratives and our mission.  It has been rewarding to hear the stories and experiences of alumni as they shared with this year's students the impact that Bridgton had on their life and lessons they have learned over the years.

On Thursday, November 3rd, we were privileged to hear from two alumni in one day.  Bob Bogan '83 and president of the Board of Trustees shared many life lessons he has learned in his talk entitled "Study Guide for Life".  Bob earned his BS degree from Westfield State College and is president of Borden and Remington Corp. in Fall River, MA.  Immediately following, Col. David Brigham '84 relayed the events of his life since graduating from Bridgton.  He holds a BS in Physical Science from Norwich University, a Master's Degree from the Naval War College, and has served in the US Army, traveling all over the world and serving in a variety of positions.  Brigham has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at both Bridgton Academy and Norwich University.  Last December, he was promoted to Colonel and is currently stationed in the Pentagon.  Additionally, he is a National Security Fellow at Harvard University in The Kennedy School

Just a few short days later, artist Abner Preis '95 spoke of his most recent project called "The Superhero Project,"  in which he has traveled all over the world.  In any given location ranging from a subway station to a busy city street in the Middle East, Abner dresses as a superhero. As he talks with people, he in turn gives them a costume to put on and inquires of them, "If you had three powers, what would they be?"  Abner also recalled his days at Bridgton and how much it meant to him to be a student here.  After his talk, he spent the day on campus talking with many of the students here.

Thank you to all three gentlemen who have taken time to come to campus and been willing to share.  If you would like to learn more about coming to Bridgton to present at our Cheds, please contact Dean of Students, Rich MacDonald at rmacdonald@bridgtonacademy.org or call (207) 647-3322, ext. 253.

Brendan Allen '11 Playing Key Role at UConn - Brendan Allen, who just graduated from Bridgton this past May, found his way onto the Huskies basketball team as a walk-on, not ever knowing if he would get much of an opportunity to play.  For UConn's season opener against Columbia on November 11th, Brendan found himself in the position of back-up point guard. Coach Calhoun commented on how much improvement he has seen in Allen, as well as how impressed he is with Brendan's hard work.  The Huskies easily won their first game with a final score of 70-57.  You can read a recent article about Brendan posted by CTPost.com here!

From BA, To St. John's, Now Overseas - Paris Horne '07 and Justin Burrell '07 both finished up successful careers at St. John's in Queens, NY.  Upon graduation, both have signed contacts with teams overseas.  Horne was the first in their graduating class to sign a professional contact, as he will join Germany's BG Gottingen.  After working out with both the Charolette Bobcats and the LA Clippers, Burell has signed with JapansYokohama B-Corsairs.

Congratulations and Good Luck!!
Networking Event in Boston - In an effort to get in touch with more Bridgton alumni, Anthony D'Onofrio '89 is organizing a networking event.  Scheduled for Wednesday, November 30th from 7:00 am - to 8:00 am, this gathering will be held at the Dunkin' Donuts at 200 Seaport Blvd. in Boston.  His goals and objectives in doing this are: developing new alumni networking relationships, finding out what careers alumni have been involved with since graduation from Bridgton, listening and learning - discovering the needs and pains of alumni working in the corporate world, and promoting business growth within the Bridgton Academy Alumni Network.  If you would like to join in or have any questions, please email Anthony at ndonofrio@everybrandapparel.com or call him at 857-888-1222.

News From The Soccer Team...

The soccer team traveled to Hebron Academy this week for a make up game due to the snow storm earlier in the season. Bridgton scored early as Peter Ventola (Salem, NH) put the Wolverines on the board. Hebron also managed to tally a goal in the first half, resulting in a 1-1 tie going into the second. Bridgton didn't hold back as they scored three more unanswered goals in the second to pull ahead 4-1. While Bridgton let up in the last few seconds, Hebron was able to score one last goal, resulting in a final score of 4-2, Bridgton.

The soccer team had a long two week break to prepare for their home match up against The Winchendon School. Their hard work paid off as they shut out the Wapities 3-0 in what Coach Ashenfelter remarked was "One of our best performances to date.  To start off the game, Peter Ventola (Salem, NH) finished a feed from Eddie Demoya assisted (Salem, MA).Demoya then secured a 2-0 lead as he netted an unassisted goal with just over three minutes to go in the first half. The match up was a physical game and Winchendon was fighting for a comeback, leading to some chippy plays on both sides of the field.Aidan Harrison (Medfield, MA) put away the insurance goal with 20 minutes left in the game for the 3-0 win.

Coach Ashenfelter was satisfied with the performance, commenting afterwards, "We played 90 minutes of soccer and did the things we practiced. We had a few cheap shots, but hopefully we will learn from this and let the scoreboard do the talking. We need to finish the game like professionals. We took another step forward this week, and we will use the experience for improvement."

News From the Football Team...

The Bridgton Academy Wolverines traveled down to Hanover, New Hampshire this weekend to play the Big Green of Dartmouth. It took Bridgton a quarter to get off the bus, and by the time they came around, the score was 21-0 Dartmouth. The BA defense was forced into tough positions due to dropped passes, some of which resulted in tip-drill interceptions and missed assignments. Dartmouth never found the score board again, however, as the BA defense found a way to get it done. In the second half, Bridgton managed to score twice, but it wasn't enough. Dartmouth put pressure on the quarterback all day, but especially in the second half and managed to hold on to the victory, 21-12.

This game was all about starting and finishing.Bridgton started slow and couldn't finish, which led to their 3rd loss of the season.Bridgton travels to St. Anselm's in Manchester, NH next Sunday for their final game of the season.

The football team has a tough match up this week as they traveled down to Providence, Rhode Island to play the Brown University JV squad.Although it was a well-played game, Bridgton ultimately lost 31-18 to Brown. Bridgton came out of the gates fast, scoring on the third play of the game on a screen pass from quarterback Mitch Graziano (Kingston, MA) to wide receiver Derek Beck (Martinsville, NJ) for a 75 yard touchdown. Brown quickly answered with a long 69 yard touchdown pass of their own, giving Brown a 7-6 lead just minutes into the game. The next score was a Brown touchdown pass with just under five minutes to go in the half.  Bridgton was the team to answer back this time with a score right before the half with a touchdown reception to Austin Harrington (Chanhassen, MN) from quarterback Mike Luks (Amherst, NH). Brown had a slight 14-12 lead going into the half.

The second half started off with a "Brown Bang". Only 21 seconds into the half, Brown threw for a 54 yard touchdown making the game 21-12.Bridgton got the ball back and threw an interception, which led to the second consecutive touchdown drive for Brown in the second half, giving them a 28-12 lead. In the fourth quarter, Brown extended their lead with a field goal to make the score 31-12.Bridgton showed some life and made a successful drive which ended in a touchdown pass to Harrington.Brown blocked the extra point, and took away the 31-18 win.

After a day off from competition, the Jr. B team hit the ice again, this time to take on Southern New Hampshire University at home.Following Friday night's 9-1 win, Bridgton worked hard once again to secure a 9-2 win of SNHU's Club team.

Right off the bat, Bridgton drew a penalty and Cody Norton (South Burlington, VT) scored with assists from Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME) and John Sheil (Narragansett, RI).Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI) scored next off assists from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) and Chris Mini (Everett, MA).SNHU then scored to close the gap.It didn't take long, however, for Bridgton to pull ahead as Kevin Seely (Berkley, MA) scored a power play goal off a feed from Barry O'Neil (Falmouth, MA).Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) scored Bridgton's final goal of the first period unassisted and shorthanded.

In the second period, SNHU held Bridgton to one goal with Dylan Larrow (Ludlow, MA) scoring off O'Neil and Matt Driscoll (Dedham, MA).SNHU also snuck in a goal to tie the period up, although they still trailed 5-2.

Bridgton came out on fire in the third period with Ethan Charny (Chicago, IL) scoring twice in one shift, both assists from Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME) and Burke. The line then rounded out the scoring with Pettingill nettings Bridgton's final goal of the game from Charny and Burke.John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net saving 31 of the 33 shots SNHU fired at him.

Coach Meserve called the game "another big win" commenting, " SNHU has some big college guys, and our guys had to battle for each and every puck. Now we still have to work on bringing the intensity each and every shift."

The Jr. A hockey team took the ice against the Boston Jr. Bruins in what proved to be a close match up. Ryan Connors (Marshfield, MA) started off the night as the Wolverines took advantage of a powerplay and Connors finished a feed from Marco Spisso (Highland Falls, NY) to take a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game. Bridgton continued to dominate for the rest of the period, but the Bruins were a man up in the last minute of the period, and snuck a goal past goaltender Pat Farrington (Sandwich, MA) to tie up the game.

Taking the ice for the second period, the Wolverines were fired up and determined to take back the lead with Mike Marchionda (Hyde Park, MA) netting the go ahead goal with assists from Tommy Graham (Medfield, MA) and Cam Kennedy (Lynn, MA). Connors tallied his second goal of the game shortly after in the second period off a pass from John Sartell (Wakefield, MA) to take a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

Right off the bat in the final period, the Bruins scored, closing the gap to one goal. After a few trips up and down the ice, Bridgton scored another powerplay goal as Zach Wells buried the Wolverine's final puck of the night from Spisso and Connors. With a 4-2 lead, the Wolverines were not out of the clear. The Bruins kept up the tempo of the game, but Bridgton had no trouble hanging in there. Bridgton held the lead, even with the Bruins last goal with three seconds left in the game, securing a 4-3 win for the Wolverines.
