Greetings!

The fall season has settled in at Bridgton Academy. The foliage is almost at peak, with the treeline full of red, orange, and yellow color. While the days are staying fairly mild, the nights and mornings remind everyone that winter is indeed on its way. In the interim, those of us who aren't huge fans of the cold are holding on to these classic fall days and enjoying a (hopefully) slow transition to snowy weather.

Our classrooms, dorms, and athletic fields are busy as we wrap up the first quarter of study and sport at BA. It's hard to believe that a quarter of school has already passed us by!

Here is some  more recent news from North Bridgton...

Come show your support of Wolverine Lacrosse!

We Have Signage! Anonymous Donor Adds Visibility to Campus - Driving into North Bridgton is no longer the same as it used to be.  Anyone with the destination of Bridgton Academy is now welcomed to campus before they even arrive with the posting of a brand new sign on the edge of North Bridgton village that proudly reads: "Welcome to Bridgton Academy -  Home of the Wolverines." Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, not only is there a welcoming sign, nearly every building on campus is boasting new signage as well. In keeping up with all of the renovations on the building, the tired old sign on Hamlin Study Center has been replaced with one that's larger and clearer to read, helping to make this building look even better.  Some buildings that had no signs at all, such as the Humanities Center and the Wolverine Den, are now easily identified. Both The Ellis-Fisher Memorial Field and The Athletic Complex, which houses the gymnasium, the ice arena, and all of the athletic fields, received a boost in publicity with the addition of their huge new markers.

Bridgton Academy would like to thank the individual who had a vision of making this happen, then provided the gift to make it a reality.

BA Alumnus Becomes a Household Name -  Victor Cruz '05, continues to prove himself during his second year in the NY Giants organization and this year has seen a significant amount of playing time, racking up two 100+ yard games and scoring three touchdowns thus far this year.  He's also become a hot pickup for fantasy football fans all over, as evidenced in this  SI.com article.

In talking with Coach Marcella, he reflected on Cruz's season at BA: "It was easy to see that Victor was an extremely talented athlete.  He had tremendous hands and worked hard to improve his route running that season.   He made one of the most acrobatic catches I've ever seen on a fade ball right by our bench on Parents' Weekend.  He really climbed the ladder--- twisting to his back shoulder and made a one-handed grab before hitting the ground--HARD!  Our whole sidelines erupted!  It was amazing! He led the team that season ['04] with 47 receptions for 883 yards & 8 TD's."

Good luck to Victor this season!

New X-Block Enhances Student Life - This year students have added a new class to their schedules entitled "BA Experiences."  The idea of BA Experiences is to show the students all that the Academy has to offer.  Instead of BA Experiences as a graduation requirement, Dean of Residential Life Adria Carr had a vision to make the experiences a weekly activity to help the students grow and develop over the quarter.  A few of the BA Experiences offered are skeet shooting, 3v.3 hockey, basketweaving, media publications, ceramics, cycling, cooking club, tennis, and much more.  So far Adria has been thrilled with the program's success saying, "We are excited to be able to bring life back to many extracurricular clubs and programs to to introduce a wide assortment of new ones to our students and staff!"

Kate Levielle and Adria Carr lead the cooking club this quarter.  The group of students got messy as they experiemented with pancakes, baked for the Parents' Weekend Bake Sale, and even watched a demonstation by a Johnson and Wales representative.

A group of students took to the tennis courts with Bob Katz to explore a new game.  Some students had a little to no experience, but they all took their turn learning the rules and techniques of the game, while getting a good workout!

Merry Vigneau taught a group of students the history and art of Nantucket basketweaving over the six weeks.  Not a single student had experience in weaving, and by the end of the class they all walked away with beautiful Nantucket Baskets they completed by themselves.

A special thanks goes out to the Yearbook Club for hiking all over campus to capture the BA Experiences in action.  They mastered the art of photography, and even experimented with interviewing and video editing.

Eden Dunckel and Michelle Cross headed up the food pantry group, in which the students involved developed a plan for raising money to assist the local food pantry.  To date, they have raised nearly $400, with more fund-raising efforts planned for the second quarter.

Parents' Weekend A Success Despite Rainy Weather -  Despite the rainy and cold weather for most of the weekend, Parents' Weekend 2011 was a success!  The weekend provided a wonderful opportunity for parents not only to visit with their sons, but also meet with teachers, advisors, and coaches.

Highlights of the weekend featured a variety of events to choose from.  On Friday, parents were able to attend classes with their sons.  There was also a panel discussion on the first-year college experience with three guest speakers, as well as a Silent Auction/Bake Sale which benefited the Class of 2012 class gift.  Saturday included a headmaster's dessert reception, touring the Spratt-Mead museum on campus, and a boat ride aboard the Songo River Queen.  The Development Office hosted a Parents Thank You tailgate during half-time at Sunday's football game.

Even with the rain, all sports events scheduled over the weekend were played as planned. Friday's baseball game was fortunate enough to have the only sunny day of the weekend, as the field became a huge puddle by Sunday.  They easily defeated Central Maine Community College with a score of 9-6.  On Saturday, the lacrosse team played Navy Prep, resulting in a hard-fought loss of 10-9.  The Jr. A hockey team battled against the New England Wolves on both Saturday and Sunday, and were unfortunately not able to come out on top in either game.  Sunday's Jr. B  hockey game against Walpole Express was close, but also ended in a 4-3 loss.  The final game of the weekend brought out a large crowd of umbrellas, rain jackets, and boots, seeing the football team victorious against Merrimack J.V. with a final score of 14-6.

We thank all parents and family members who participated in the weekend and helped to make it such an enjoyable time for all!!

Curry Tailgate Brings Alumni and Parents Together - Sunday, September 18 was a perfect New England fall day for football, in particular, the Alumni-Parent Tailgate at Curry College. Eleven alumni gathered in Milford, MA to cheer on this year's Wolverine football team, while having the opportunity to meet some of this year's parents, as well as calling to mind their own days of rushing down the field.

Pre-game cider and donuts were enjoyed as stories of football days gone by were tossed around. There were stories of yellow bus rides, and those of post-game meals that consisted of coach ordering pizza. There were also stories of the days of wearing blue BA football uniforms, as well as playing against BC. As the 1:00 kickoff approached, many of the tailgate preparations were already well underway: 2 BA tents were set up, the grills were fired up and ready to start cooking, and parents and alumni were anticipating a great game! All in attendance were treated to a victory as the Wolverines dominated Curry with a score of 40-7, providing for an even more exciting tailgate. Stopping by to share a few words after the game was special guest and Curry head coach Skip Bandini, who is also a BA alumnus from 1977. Many were also able to chat with Susan Yule P'11, who is this year's Parent Chair. The warm sun and changing autumn leaves provided the perfect atmosphere for this wonderful day!

Alumni who came out were George Mullen '59, Bob Larrabee '63, Tobey Woodworth '76, George Reed '70, Tom Burbank '59, Herb Borden '66, Peter Winn '79, and Bob Weston '59. Additionally David Higgins '76 and Eric Johnson '84 were there not only as alumni, but as current parents with sons Jonathan Higgins and Brandon Johnson playing for the Wolverines this fall. Also in attendance at the game were Dr. Robert Walker P'09, Parrish Rogers-Reed '11, and Jamie White '10. Special thanks to Jerry Mrozek and Karen Graziano for organizing the parents' side of the tailgate, as well as those who helped in a variety of other ways. We are already looking forward to the fun of this annual event next fall!

Peter Ventola (Salem, NH) and Will McGowan (Andover, MA) tallied the Wolverines first two goals of the game. Kents Hill put on past BA's goaltender, but Edwin Demoya (Salem, MA) netted two more for Bridgton to secure the 4-1 win.

The Soccer team kept their momentum rolling as they traveled to Central Maine Community College on Wednesday and returned home with a big 6-0 win.

The game was close at the start with Luca Viscomi (Newton, MA) scoring in the first half to give BA a 1-0 lead. The play was back and forth, but BA managed to hold onto the lead. Eddie Demoya (Salem, MA) netted the next two goals, with Peter Ventola (Salem, NH) scoring the last goal of the game to secure the 6-0 win.

News From the Football Team...

Bridgton Academy drove all the way down to New York City this week to face off against Columbia University. The BA-CU game last year was a barn-burner and this year proved to be just the same.

Bridgton brought their defense up to the plate first with a couple of stops, but eventually Columbia was the first to get on the scoreboard with a field goal making the game 3-0. Bridgton then responded with two touchdowns to make the score 14-3. Columbia answered with a touchdown of their own, closing the gap to 14-10 with only a minute remaining in the first half. The Wolverines then worked their two-minute drill to perfection, scoring as time ran out to take a 21-10 lead going into the half. At half time, Coach Marcella  was adamant that the game was not over, "Columbia will find a way to get back into the game."

As Coach Marcella predicted, Columbia did just that. Columbia scored first in the second half making it a 21-17 game. Bridgton came back with a score of their own to make it 28-17. Columbia then scored a touchdown, failing on a two-point conversion, to make it 28-23. Bridgton followed by another touchdown to make it 28-30 Columbia. This was their first lead in the game since their first field goal in the first quarter. Columbia's next possession again started well into Bridgton territory. They were looking to score a touchdown and go ahead by two scores, but the Wolverine defense who had played very well all game stopped the Columbia offense in dramatic fashion and forced them to take a field goal to make the score 33-28 Columbia. Poor Special Teams play by Bridgton and great Columbia field position swung the momentum back their way. Bridgton answered back with a touch down of their own in the final minutes of the game to make the score 34-33 Bridgton after a failed two point conversion.

In one last attempt, Columbia drove the ball into BA territory well inside field goal range. Bridgton defense had a huge sack, which pushed Columbia out of field goal range and made it fourth down. Columbia's throw was incomplete and the Wolverines took over to finish the game with a final score of Bridgton 34, Columbia 33.

The football team was on the road this week as they traveled to Navy Prep. The defenses for both teams were the first to make their mark on the game.No points were scored for either team until Navy broke through and scored on a pass play to the running back streaking down the seam. BA went three and out on their next possession and were forced to punt.Navy found themselves on the score board again, blocking the punt and returning it for another touchdown.Bridgton might have been down but they weren't out. After the blocked punt the Wolverine offense marched down the field and with a full layout touchdown catch from Mitch Graziano (Kingston, MA) to Austin Harrington (Chanhassen, MN).Navy managed to put another score in before the half to make the score 21-7.Bridgton then came back to score in the third quarter on a quarterback scramble by Mike Luks (Amherst, NH) to make the score 28-14.Navy would go on to score two more times, and Bridgton only once more on a run by Sean Reed (West Windsor, NJ), making the final 42-21 in favor of Navy.

Steve Cronan has been announced as September's Athlete of the Month. Athletic Director Joe Sawicki takes nominations from all coaches, assessing the athletes based not only on performance, but on character and leadership as well. At quarterback, Cronon has lead the team on and off the field, as well as in the book. The football team was 3-2 for the month of September with Cronoan leading the pack. In the five games, Cronan went 19-28, passing for 276 yards. He had six touchdown passes and only one interception. Cronan also ran the ball 13 times for 34 yards and two touchdowns.

Congratulations Stephen!

News From The Hockey Team...

The Jr. A hockey team hosted the Albany Americans this past weekend and split the pair of games.

In the first contest of the weekend, Bridgton had a strong 4-0 lead which they held onto until the third period. Albany had a string of goals that Bridgton could not stop, and took the 5-4 win.

In the second game, Bridgton was determined to come back from their upsetting loss the night before. The Wolverines dominated the play and came out on top with an 8-3 win, with the key difference being comming together and playing as a single unit. All in all, Bridgton outshot Albany 60-21. Coach Lounsbury was happy with the comeback, but commented "We can play a strong 40 minutes. Our next goal is to play all 60."

On Saturday, the Jr. B hockey team started their weekend off with a big 7-1 win over the Worcester Wildcats. Chris Mini (Everett, MA) started things with assists from Marquise Cotten (Washington, DC) and Cody Norton (Essex, VT). John Sheil (Narragansett, RI), Zach Pettingill (Scarborough, ME), Dan MacInnes (Plymouth, MA), Brian McKeown (Scarborough, ME), Billy Smith (Boston, MA), and Norton netted the next six goals for Bridgton in the dominating win. John Busa (Billerica, MA) played in net for the Wolverines and saved 13 of the 14 shots that came his way.

On Sunday the Wolverines continued their weekend with a 7-3 loss to the Jr. Valley Warriors. Sheil put away Bridgton's first goal of the game from Dusty Burke (Sherborn, MA) and Smith. MacInnes tallied his second goal of the weekend off a feed from McKeown and Cory Durkin (Narraganset, RI). Finally McKeown netted Bridgton's third and final goal unassisted. Brendan Gaetjens (Montclair, NJ) played between the pipes and saved 38 of 45 shots he faced.

Coach Meserve commented after the second game, "We did some things very well this weekend, however, there are a lot of little things we have to fix. In both games, our attention to details cost us some opportunities"

Coach Meserve is happy to announce Cory Durkin (Narragansett, RI) as Captain of this year's Jr. B Hockey team and Billy Smith (Boston, MA) as Assistant Captain.

Durkin comes to Bridgton Academy from Narragansett High School where he played four years of hockey and soccer. Durkin was a two time captain of his hockey team and a senior captain of his soccer team. In 2007-2008 Durkin's hockey team won the RI DIII State Championship.

"I feel lucky to have the opportunity to lead such a great group of hockey players and individuals," said Durkin when asked about the Coach's selection. "It's going to be a long season, but if our team plays the way we should, we can be very successful."

Joining Durkin is Smith who was also named Assistant Captain of his Brookline High School Varsity hockey team, where he played for four years prior to attending Bridgton Academy.

"It's going to be a lot of fun to watch our potential unravel," commented Smith. "We have a competitive schedule and we are going to have some real battles, but our coaches have prepared us well."

News From The Lacrosse Team...

The lacrosse team took the field in the pouring rain to take on Navy Prep for Parents' Weekend. While Navy held the lead for most of the game, Bridgton never gave up. Blake Pendleton (Wayland, MA) started off the Wolverines with two goals in the first quarter. Nick Gorrasi (Sandwich, MA), Lawerence Dee (Charlotte, VT), Dylan Parlee (Essex, MA) (with two),Ryan O'Sullivan (Centerville, VA), and Teddy Wright (Copiague, NY) all tallied goals to cut Navy's lead to 10-8. With 1:52 left in the game, BA called a time out to regroup for the last drive of the game. With 1:11 on the clock, Parlee netted his third goal of the game to make it a one goal difference. Navy had one last break which the Wolverines stopped, then taking the ball down the field for their last chance. Unfortunately, Navy's goalie was able to stop a blast from BA to win the game 10-9. Although the Wolverines suffered a loss, they worked together as a team and never once gave up.

In total, BA scooped 22 ground balls with Walt Hinnent (Winston Salem, NC), Parlee, and Pendelton leading the way with 3 each. Chris Smith (Montclair, NJ) played the first half in goal and stopped 4 shots and Tyler Abernathy (Winston Salem, NC) finished off the game with six saves in net.
