Thank you to everyone who has already participated in our 2011 Annual Fund - we would not be able to do what we do without your support. If you haven't given yet, now is your chance! Making a gift to BA takes only a minute or two, and will leave you feeling great about helping a mission and program that you love.

All those who make a gift between now and June 30th will be listed in our 2011 Annual Report on Giving. Gifts to BA are 100% tax deductible, and all major credit cards are accepted.

Congratulations Bridgton Academy Class of 2011 - On a misty Saturday May morning 144 students marched into the Bridgton Ice Arena and an hour later 144 newly minted Bridgton Academy Alumni walked out. As Chairman of the Board, Kevin Hancock said, "Once a Wolverine always a Wolverine." It has been that way for 203 years.

This year's graduating class will be representing Bridgton Academy at over 90 different colleges and universities next year. Class members saw acceptances to over 140 different schools. Congratulations to the Class of 2011 and best of luck to those young men as they move onto the next phase of their lives. BA Alumni - please join us in welcoming our newest Class of Wolverines!

Mrs. Adria Carr Recognized as Inaugural Andrew F. Staub '04 Award Recipient -

Bridgton Academy was both excited and pleased to announce Mrs. Adria Carr as the inaugural recipient of the Andrew F. Staub '04 Professional Development Award. Initially established by the family of Andrew F. Staub '04, this endowed fund was created with the sole purpose of benefitting the faculty of Bridgton Academy.

"Bridgton Academy IS the faculty," stated Andrew Staub '04. "This is the year that makes a difference because the faculty brings out the most in the students. I left BA a better person, and I believe that's because the teachers truly cared about me and the mission of the school. It is undoubtedly the faculty that makes the difference in the year that makes the difference."

The Andrew F. Staub '04 Award calls for a teacher that is a consistently positive role model to students, an accessible, helpful instructor, and a passionate leader within the Academy. The Staub Endowment provides an annual monetary award to be used as the recipient sees fit for her/his professional development. The honoree is chosen based upon a comprehensive voting and interview process. Students, faculty, and staff alike had the opportunity to nominate their teacher of choice.

Mrs. Adria Carr was ultimately chosen as the 2011 Andrew F. Staub '04 award recipient. This announcement was made at Commencement on May 14th by Headmaster Grady Vigneau, and Student Dean's Council President, Richard Jenkins '11. Mrs. Carr, who joined the Bridgton Academy staff in 2003, serves as an English teacher, Community Life Coordinator, and College Counselor. Her interactions with Bridgton students are many, and go beyond the classroom setting to embrace all aspects of student residential life.

Carr said of the award, "I am incredibly honored to be the recipient of the first Staub Award. When I interviewed as a finalist, the first thing I discussed was how fortunate I feel, every day, to be doing what I love--working with students in college counseling, in the classroom, and in the community/residential life sphere. I am really excited to use part of the award stipend to fund a trip to a technology conference in Texas this summer. By attending this Naviance conference and workshops, I will continue to grow and improve as an educator; and without the Staub funding, this conference would not be possible. Again, I can't thank the Staub family enough for their generosity and contributions to the ongoing success of Bridgton Academy and its mission."

Nice Gathering at Reunion 2011 - In keeping with BA tradition, Reunion 2011 was once again held the first weekend in June.  This year's schedule was slightly different than years past, beginning the weekend with a dinner cruise down Long Lake aboard the Songo River Queen.  About 25 ventured out on a windy but bright evening for what turned out to be a fabulous time.

Saturday morning featured the Hall of Fame Brunch, with Bridgton's own Rod McGarry '57 as the emcee for the event. This year's inductees were John Aquilino '80, Roger Austin '86, Harold Damelin '65, Al Glover - former trustee, Paul Guimond '79, Cole Proctor '62, William Seach '63, Addison Wiggin '87, and Vernon Wood - former faculty and posthumously inducted.  Not all inductees were able to be present, but those who did attend - Roger Austin, Harold Damelin, Al Glover, and Addison Wiggin - each shared meaningful words with those in attendance.  In addition, well-renowned Maine ski coach Tom Reynolds was present to accept the award for Paul Guimond, and Grant Wood '66 spoke on behalf of his father, Vern.  It was a picture perfect day for photos after the ceremony at the Hall of Fame garden, located at the far end of the Wolverine Football field. To read bios about each of our 2011 Hall of Fame inductees, please click here.

On Saturday evening, the Reunion dinner started with a hospitality hour in the Student Lounge at Goldsmith Dining Hall.  As alumni arrived, they were treated to drinks and appetizers while reminiscing with former classmates and faculty.  The Class of 1981 had the largest representation: Denis McCarthy, Glen Ginter, Brian Mahoney, and Kevin Jones were all in attendance.  Kevin Jones was accompanied by six of his family members including his wife, Carol, two daughters, and his parents Robert & Elaine. Brian Jones '85 rounded out the Jones family representation at Reunion 2011! The decade of the 1940's was also well represented with Joann Fillebrown '48, Phil Denison '48, Prentiss '49 and Edith '51 Kimball, Gordon '48 and Virginia '49 Knight, Marguerite Frisbie Dale '47, and Barbara Lord Dalgaard '48 all present.   The most recent alumnus who attended was Jeff Schemeltz from the Class of 2010.

Reunion 2011 closed with breakfast at Goldsmith Dining Hall.  Though this year's attendance at all events was down from some other years, it still proved to be wonderful time in honoring the alumni of Bridgton Academy, those who have experienced first-hand the difference that BA makes. Next year, Bridgton Academy will look to honor milestone years ending in 2's and 7's! To view pictures of Reunion 2011, please visit BA's Shutterfly page by clicking this link. Board President Mr. Kevin Hancock Retires - After serving two-terms as Bridgton Academy Board President, Mr. Kevin Hancock officially passed the gavel at a recent meeting this June to incoming President Robert Bogan, a graduate of BA's Class of 1983.

Kevin began his relationship with Bridgton as a teacher, coach, and dorm parent during the 1980's. His father, the late David Hancock, also served as a long-time Academy trustee. President of Maine based Hancock Lumber Company, Kevin generously invested his intellect, mission-belief, and passion into his service as a Bridgton Academy trustee.

Bob Bogan, BA Class of 1983, will now fill the position of Board President. In addition to Kevin Hancock, other retiring trustees included Bill Savoie '79, Ms. Nickie Avery, Mr. Dan Romanchuk, and Mr. Bob Harmon. These volunteers will be deeply missed for their commitment, belief, and leadership. The Board was pleased to welcome new trustees Mr. Chris Harlow and Mark Carlson '87 to the most recent meeting this June.

Bridgton Ice Arena Receives Funding Infusion from Local Foundation - The Bridgton Ice Arena, home to Wolverine Hockey, recently received a grant of $20,000 from the Kendall C. and Anna Ham Charitable Foundation of North Conway, New Hampshire. Throughout the past year, Bridgton Academy has worked hard to make improvements to the Ice Arena, including the installation of new lighting and construction of two new team locker rooms. Plans for the Bridgton Ice Arena do not end there. Additional improvements in the works include construction of office and meeting space over the Zamboni parking area, along with renovations to additional restroom and locker room areas. Next time you visit Bridgton Ice Arena, be sure to let us know what you think of these new renovations!
Strong Progress in BA Admission - The Bridgton Academy Admission Office has had a busy Spring. With the introduction of the Academy's first-ever online application, our number of applicants and visitors to campus has been the strongest in modern day record. To date, our projected enrollment for the Class of 2012 will be at or near capacity. It's not too late to refer a student for the Class of 2012. If you know of a young man that may benefit from the Bridgton Academy experience, please contact Chris Webb, Director of Admission, at cwebb@bridgtonacademy.org or call (207) 647-3322.

It is the mission of the National Football Foundation to "inspire our nation's youth to compete on the athletic fields and in the classroom and to assume leadership roles on the high school and college campuses today." Jon has worked very hard this year in the classroom and on the football field and follows in the footsteps of many Bridgton Academy alumni who have also received this award.

Past recipients from BA have included Matt Burgess '88, Michael Bruneau '90, John Powers '91 (past faculty member), Thomas Asbury '92, Robert Sinram '93, Thomas MacLeod '94, Charles McElligott '97, Patrick Shairs '02 (past faculty member and football coach), Michael Whitticon '04, Thomas Daley '05, Christopher Chandler '06, Charles Bachelder '07, and James Burrell '08.

Day played tight end at Bridgton Academy and is attending Wesleyan University in September. Head football coach, Rick Marcella said of Day, "The thing that strikes me the most about Jon is his work ethic. He brings that with him everywhere he goes, with great motivation and follow through. Jon refuses to be outworked by anybody."

When asked about the award, Jon said, "I am extremely honored just to be nominated for this very prestigious award. Thank you to all my coaches who have pushed me along the way and taught me to never stop working my absolute hardest. I wouldn't be where I am today without the help of great coaches through my career. I also want to take the time and say thank you to my mom who always pushed me to be better than I was in anything. I'd be lost without her."...»
