From the Desk of Coach Lesure -
Fundraising Effort a Great Success
Bridgton Academy would like to proudly announce that the summer and fall fundraising campaign within the basketball program to produce two significant upgrades for current and future BA basketball student-athletes has been completed successfully! Spurred on by the generosity of many enthusiastic and loyal supporters of Bridgton Academy, the basketball program was able to achieve its goal of a totally refurbished locker room area and the purchase of The Gun - a state of the art skill development apparatus. The locker room, soon to be completed, will feature an increased space with a full face lift including 18 spacious wooden lockers, rubber flooring, video equipment, and, of course, fresh paint. The Gun is the latest 8000 model that allows for individual and team shooting practice in the most efficient manner possible. Thousands of shots were taken in the first days of use alone, as many players quickly saw the potential benefits of the device.
Coach Lesure was very excited about the completion of these two initiatives. "I would like to publicly thank all of the donors to this project, and specifically acknowledge the signature donation of Phil Saunier '58 whose support made the creation of the new basketball team room a reality. An improvement of this magnitude will add to the tremendous pride our young men take in putting on the BA uniform."
When describing The Gun, Lesure commented that "Most good college programs have at least one, and many high schools today have also seen the value in this training machine. The Gun is similar to a pitching machine, or blocking sled in other sports, it will be a great tool to add fresh dimensions to our individual training."
More than anything else, Coach Lesure hopes that the basketball fundraising success will highlight what many individuals already do to help BA, and motivate others to explore ways in which they may contribute to the tradition and mission of Bridgton Academy. Coach Lesure looks forward to finding new and better ways to engage with those individuals that hold a special place for BA. "I always enjoy the phone calls or notes from not only the players or parents of students I've coached, but especially from the "old-timers" who have some pretty remarkable stories to share." Both Coach Lesure and the Development Office will look to build on this successful venture by creating new avenues of alumni involvement. Thank you again to all of the donors who have made these improvements possible for the Bridgton Academy basketball program!

2010-2011 Season Preview - New Recruits and an Optimistic Outlook
The 2010-2011 Bridgton Academy Wolverines are gearing up for what could be an exciting year on the hardwood of the Wolverdome in North Bridgton ME. This year's group of young men again features players from across the country, but also highlights a greater international flavor to the roster with four players coming from outside the United States. The fall season witnessed thirteen players in conditioning regimens under the direction of new BA trainer Craig Moody, and many days of individual work on the court and in the weight room. Additionally, many college coaches from across the country chose selected days to watch the talents of the Wolverines during their preseason workouts. The BA roster includes the backcourt play of Ryan Rogers (Falmouth, ME), Kareem Canty (New York, NY), Cory Spence (Baltimore, MD), Tommy McDonnel (Durham, NH), Nebru Exantus (Apopka, FL), and Marko Variclick (Milton, Canada). Adding their talents on the wing are Alex Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro), Corey Shaw (Gainsville, FL), Brendan Allen (Windsor, CT), and Josh Altman (Rockport, MA). The BA frontcourt is headed by Ryan Martin (London, UK), Daniel Franca (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Donnie Hale (New Albany, IN).
BA Coach Whit Lesure returns for his 14th year at the helm with top assistants Tim Atwood (2nd year) and Bobby Holden (5th yr) back in the fold to help bring out the best in this team. The Wolverines will also benefit from student-assistant Quinn Allen who will be called upon to fill many roles during the upcoming season. Quinn is no stranger to basketball, BA, or Coach Lesure, having grown up just down the road, playing on competitive Lake Region Varsity teams, and befriending many former BA standout players.
Lesure is optimistic about the coming season but also well aware of the growing competition from other prep schools around New England. "We are fortunate to compete in a great league, and we have had our share of success in recent years...I think our guys come in here expecting to do well, but probably have a few things to learn along the way." It's easy to spot a few hometowns outside of the U.S. on the 2010-2011 roster, and Lesure was quick to comment on the geographic make-up of the team. "First, I think our team reflects the globalization of the game basketball, and second, I could candidly care less where a kid comes from if his character and talent is a good fit for us at Bridgton Academy."
If anyone knows how good this team can become they aren't saying it too loudly around campus. "We've never really been into making too many statements," Lesure said, referencing his favorite college football coach and former UNH friend, Chip Kelly (current BCS #1 Oregon Ducks).
