Greetings!
A busy August and September has flown by at BA. Right now, as I write this e-news, twenty BA students share a study hall classroom with me. We've been in here for an hour - although it might feel like two for some of us - and everyone is busy with reading, flash cards, and papers. Some students are working on Nutrition homework, others haven't been able to look up once from reading Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road. The reality of the BA schedule, in this room at least, has officially set in. The routine of nightly study hall, the balance of class and sports, dorm life, and community. The amazing thing about BA is that although the faces change, the moral of the story stays the same - one year can really create a lifetime of memories. Here is some recent news from campus: |
|
In Search of a Name - As mentioned in the last edition of the e-news, BA's new student center is scheduled to open during the month of October. The building was in large part made possible by the generous donations of a small group of BA contributors, including the Board of Trustees. The Board has asked that the Class of 2011, along with our alumni and friends, submit their ideas for what the building should be named. The Class of '11 has already been polled, and now we're looking for your input! Readers of this e-news are invited to submit their name idea between now and 8:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3rd. If we choose your name - not only will you have named a building on Bridgton's campus, but we'll set you up with a nice prize! Please send your student center naming ideas to alumni@bridgtonacademy.org. Thanks! |
Make a Bid with BA - Why do your holiday shopping anywhere else? This November, Bridgton Academy will be hosting our first-ever Bridgton Academy Online Holiday Auction. Help us make this event a success! Donations so far include sports tickets, sport memorabilia, gift baskets, and more. All proceeds of the online auction benefit the 2011 BA Annual Fund.
The Online Holiday Auction will run from November 28th through December 12th, with items shipping in time for the holidays. We hope you all mark your calendars! Do you have something you'd like to donate for the Holiday Auction? New Faculty Award to be Presented This Fall: Bridgton Academy is pleased to announce that this May we will be awarding the inaugural Andrew F. Staub '04 Faculty Professional Development Award. This endowed award was created by Andrew Staub, a member of Bridgton Academy's Class of 2004, along with his parents, Robert and Christine. During his year at BA, Andrew served as a member of both the Big Brothers program and the lacrosse team. He was a resident of Jillson Hall. After his Bridgton graduation, Andrew went on to attend Lehigh University and Roanoke College where he graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. During his undergraduate years, Andrew completed internships with Senator Jim Webb of Virginia, Commonwealth Attorney Randy Leach, and Federal Judge James C. Turk of Virginia. He currently resides and works in Rhode Island.
The Andrew F. Staub '04 Faculty Professional Development Endowment was created for the sole purpose of benefiting the faculty of Bridgton Academy. With a modest endowment and limited annual budgets, the professional development opportunities available to BA staff are unfortunately limited. The Andrew F. Staub '04 Faculty Professional Development Fund will annually recognize one faculty member who has distinguished himself both in the classroom and beyond, enabling them to pursue projects or areas of study that will not only benefit their expertise as a teacher, but the currency of the entire BA faculty.
"Bridgton Academy IS the faculty," stated Andrew Staub. "This year makes a difference because the faculty brings out the most in the students. I left BA a better person, and I believe that's because the teachers truly cared about me and the mission of the school. It really is the faculty that make the difference in the year that makes the difference."

Former Headmaster Returns to Campus - Bridgton Academy is pleased to announce that as of this September, we have begun to act as a host for a potentially ground-breaking research organization, the College Transition Institute (CTI).
CTI's mission is to study the multiplicity of issues young men face during their transition from high school to college. Although not directly affiliated with Bridgton Academy, CTI's research offers incredible potential for advancing the efforts of BA faculty and staff in preparing young men to thrive amidst the rigors of college life and beyond. CTI's research will involve observation, interaction with, and evaluation of many of our students during both their year "on the hill" and subsequently, following their matriculation at the university or college of their choosing.
The founder and Executive Director of the College Transition Institute is Mr. David Hursty. For those new to BA in the last couple of years, David is both a former faculty member and former Headmaster of Bridgton Academy. In 1990, David began an association with BA as a member of our faculty. In July, 2002, he began his tenure as Headmaster (2002-2008). David's legacy at BA is significant, including, but not limited to, BA's largest capital campaign ever, resulting in the construction of our current showcase academic building, the Humanities Center. Bridgton Academy looks forward to sharing with you interesting news, research, and stories coming from CTI! |
Did You Know BA Has a Fight Song?! - Local Bridgton alumni gathered for the 27th Annual Alumni Picnic on September 7th at Crystal Lake Park in Harrison, Maine. The eldest alumna in attendance, Madelyn Buck, graduated from Bridgton Academy over 73 years ago. BA had a wonderful time picnicking with everyone. A cake was provided by alumna and baker extraordinaire Brenda Lamb '60. At the conclusion of the picnic, Mrs. Buck and BA Hall of Fame member George Holden led guests in Bridgton's often forgotten original 'fight song' - The Black and the Gray Forever. If you want to check out the song, and maybe even learn the words for yourself, visit our Facebook page where the video is posted. Rah - Rah - Rah! |
Seen on the Sidelines - We hope that many alumni, past parents, and BA friends make it out to support our athletic teams this Fall! If you come out for a game - be sure to stop by and say hello to our coaches! Recently several alumni from the Class of 1972 made appearances at hockey and football games. Howie Zussman and Larry Strycharz are pictured below as they showed up to cheer on the Wolverines at last week's football game. During time at Bridgton, both Howie and Larry played as members of the hockey team, and Howie even returned to BA after his college years to serve a brief stint as head BA tennis coach. A special thanks to both of these alumni for being loyal patriots of our athletic teams. We hope to see many more of you this year! |

First Three Weeks a Full Plate for Wolverine Athletics: Facing tough competition right out of the gates, the fall athletic season opened with some mixed results for the Wolverines. After a busy preseason, the baseball team faced the University of New Hampshire Club team earlier this September in a double header which they split. The Wolverines lost the first game 11-3, but fought back to win the second 5-1. The soccer team travelled to Northfield-Mt. Hermon on Saturday, September 11th, where they lost 6-2. The Wolverines went on to play at Springfield College on Sunday where they lost 4-1. The Lacrosse team travelled to UMass on Sunday where they won 11-5, while the Football team took on Curry College's J.V. team at home and won 40-8.
Baseball coach Aaron Izaryk was pleased with the results of the weekend and looks forward to improvement. "We faced some adversity after losing the first game, and rebounded well to win the back half of the doubleheader. I was pleased the see the guys respond with a solid game and some energy in the second game. We have some things to work on this week, and we need to learn from the UNH weekend to make ourselves better as a team. There were a few individuals with strong performances, including Bo Belt (Concord, MA), however, we need to understand the importance of team success if we're going to become the team we think we can be," said Coach Izaryk.
While the soccer team had a tough weekend, Coach Ashenfelter is staying positive and looking forward to the next competition. "We were short on subs but BA played hard for 180 minutes over two days. Now we are looking to rebound," said Ashenfelter. Jordan Stoddard (Brampton, ON) scored all three of the goals for the Wolverine soccer team this weekend.
The lacrosse team ended the weekend on a high note. Coach Bamann was very happy with the game saying, "The team played great. It was a little sloppy in the beginning but it's our first game so that's to be expected. The team played a very unselfish game. We moved the ball well and there were a lot of assisted goals which is always nice to see."
Ian Farley (Camillus, NY) lead the scoring with four goals. Alec Westerhoff (LeGrange Park, IL) also lit up the scoreboard with three goals and two assists while Sean Williamson (Falmouth, MA) added a goal and an assist. The rest of the Wolverine goals were scored by Nate Nichols (Penn Yan, NY) and Storm Stockstill (Jupiter, FL) with assists from Spencer Matches (Sammamish, WA), Jacob Luchovich (Stonington, CT),and Chris Barney (Cheshire, CT). BA out shot UMass 25-7 and had 37 ground balls while UMass only had 23. Bridgton also won 14 out of the 20 face-offs in the game. Football Coach Rick Marcella was happy with the outcome of the weekend. However, there is always room for improvement. "The team overcame a shaky start that saw the offense struggle in the first quarter. The defense really kept us in the game early and as we rolled into halftime the offense started to settle in. We played a much stronger game in the second half on both sides of the ball. Overall I am very pleased with what they have done so far," said Marcella.
On offense quarterback Jacob Grills (Niantic, CT) went six for fifteen passing with 83-yards and a touchdown. Kevin Bumpus (Bridgwater, MA), also at quarterback, went five for eight with 155 yards, three touchdowns, seven rushes, and 17- yards. Running back Julian Griffin (Hartsdale, NY) had 10 rushes and 52-yards. Jonathan Winbush (Worcester, MA) had two receptions, 23-yards, and a touchdown. Owen Ianotti (North Bennington, VT) also had two receptions, 131 yards, and two touchdowns (one catch was for 99-yards). Stephen Sweeney (Mahwah, NJ) rounded out the offense with four receptions, 54-yards, and a touchdown.
On defense TroyMoore (Worcester, MA) had 12 total tackles (eight solo and four assisted) as well as a fumble recovery. Parrish Rogers-Reed (Westfield, MA)had 15 total tackles (ten solo and five assisted) as well as a forced fumble. Charlie Bates (Reading, MA) had four total tackles (three solo and one assisted) with two pass breakups.
The next weekend showcased Wolverine athletics both on the road and at home. The soccer and baseball team started off their week of competition by both playing Central Maine Community College. The baseball team traveled to Central Maine (South Portland, ME) where they lost 11-3 on September 15th, while the soccer team faced them at home and won 6-3. The baseball team also faced Merrimack College last weekend in a two day series which they split. They lost at Merrimack on Saturday, September 18th, 8-3 but returned home to play on Sunday where they won 10-1. The lacrosse team took on Navy Prep at home on Saturday and lost 13-6 in a tough contest that was much closer in the first half. The football team traveled to Springfield College and returned with a win, defeating Springfield JV with a score of 34-14. Rounding out last week was the soccer team who played Monday night at Thayer Academy and came home with a 3-0 win.

Week Week three saw Bridgton Academy teams traveling all over New England for competitions. The soccer team had an early start on the week as they traveled to Thayer Academy on September 20th and earned a shutout beating Thayer 3-0. Two days later the baseball team traveled to Southern Maine Community College to play on Wednesday and lost 6-2. The soccer team then hit the road for a two day trip as they kept their undefeated streak alive as they tied with Deerfield Academy 1-1 and beat Worcester Academy the next day 3-2. The baseball team hit the field again on as they faced The University of New England at home on Saturday and shutout UNE 8-0. They then traveled to Lynn Massachusetts for the NECBA Showcase where they played hard but unfortunately dropped both games. They lost a close game to Boston University 4-3 and fell to Harvard 3-1. The football team faced their biggest competition to date as they visited Holy Cross and returned with their unfortunate first loss of the season, 29-6. Finally, the lacrosse team visited Stonehill College where they were victorious with a 7-3 win.

Class Reps Wanted - Are you wondering if there is an extra way you can help BA? Consider volunteering as a Class Rep. The main job of a Class Rep is to organize and communicate with their class. This year, we particularly would like to see Reps from the year's ending in 6's and 1's - as these classes will be celebrating milestone Reunions in 2011. Bridgton Academy needs the support of alumni - and there is no one better to appeal to fellow alumni then someone who has walked in the same shoes. If you want to work to rally your Class in support of Bridgton - whether to get them to attend an event, make a special gift to BA, or even just get back in touch with each other, please contact Jess Priola in the Development Office by email or call (207) 647-7657. |
