Dear ,
Only a few short class days remain before the Class of 2010 officially joins the ranks of BA alumni. Campus is busier than ever. The students are preparing for finals, wrapping up sports seasons, and enjoying classic BA evening activities including Dorm Wars Softball, parking lot grilles, and the upcoming Corey Smith '88 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Faculty and staff are wondering where the days have gone, preparing for both Commencement and the upcoming Reunion weekend. Admission activity continues to remain strong, with the final day of student-led tours set for this coming Monday. We hope to see many of you back on campus in the coming months - North Bridgton is always here to welcome you back!

Just two days left!: April is turning out to be a great month for the BA Annual Fund. A challenge was given to all alumni earlier in the month - an anonymous donor came forward and said he would match, dollar for dollar, any Annual Fund gifts made by alumni. And the alumni have stepped up to the plate! To date, you have contributed $11,474 dollars this month. Double that and you've raised $22,948 for BA! Thanks to everyone who has already participated. If you haven't made a gift yet, it's not too late to double-up for BA. Simply visit our online giving form, or call Jess Priola at (207) 647-3322 to make your gift over the phone. Way to go Wolverines!
Fuller-Avery Golf Tournament - All golfers are invited to attend this year's Fuller-Avery Golf Outing, scheduled for June 4, 2010. Join alumni, faculty, parents, and friends as we tee-up at Bridgton Highlands Country Club. The outing, in honor of late faculty members Mike Fuller '83 and Doug Avery, is always a fun time and a great way to help give future Bridgton students the financial help needed to attend BA. There is a $75 entrance fee which includes your greens fees, cart, lunch, and dinner following the tournament (all proceeds go to scholarship funds). To learn more, or register today, please visit our downloadable invitation.
Memorial Service to be Held at BA - One of Bridgton's long-time dorm mothers, Nancy Avery, sadly passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on December 7, 2009. A service in honor of the life and spirit of Nancy Avery will be held on Saturday, May 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the Twitchell Memorial Chapel. For more information, please email nancyaveryservice@gmail.com. BA Alumna Set to Recieve Diploma 64 Years Later - The Class of 2010 will be the first class of Bridgton graduates in fifty years to include a female. On Saturday, May 8th, Phyllis Wakefield Adams, originally a member of the Bridgton Academy Class of 1946, will be awarded her Bridgton diploma. A Maine native, Phyllis attended BA in '46, but was unable to finish her senior year due to her pregnancy. "When I got pregnant in my senior year at BA, I was not allowed to finish school. It was not socially acceptable in the 1940's. It was also not socially acceptable to become pregnant with a child and not marry the father. There was no question in my mind back then that I would get married and assume responsibility for my child. Today, many adolescents face the same challenge but it is handled differently. My advice to current BA boys would be to stay in school and get as much education as they possibly can to help them through life. If they decide to become a parent then remember it is the hardest, biggest, and the most rewarding job you will ever be given." Phyllis will walk across the stage on May 8th with her siblings, children, and grandchildren in attendance, receiving a diploma which has been long overdue. |

Wolverine Athletics:
Hockey Players Make College Commitments: In recent weeks, a number of hockey players have committed to their colleges of choice for next year. Pat Martin (Hanover, NH) will be attending Arizona State University this fall. Pat plans on majoring in Education and playing hockey for Arizona's Division 1 Club Program. Two other BA players have committed to Salve Regina (Newport, RI). Both Robbie Cambell (Braintree, MA) and Trey Rasmussan (West Tisbury, MA) will head to Newport to play for the Seahawks. Ian Edwards (Linden, MI) continues the longstanding tradition of BA players heading to USM, joining fellow Wolverine-Huskies Joe Curran '07, Sean Travis '09, and Chris Lacount '08. Jesse Shavel (Cumberland, ME) will be attending Johnson & Wales University. The hockey team also recently held its end-of-season banquet. Players, their families, and BA coaches were all in attendance. Awards recipients included:
Jake Donahue - Most Improved player Kyle O'Connell - Coaches Award David Stevens -UnSung Hero Award Tim Haroules - 410 Award for Best Teammate Congratulations to the 2010 Wolverine Hockey Team!
Wolverines Continue to Build Winning Record Despite Recent Bad Luck: In one of the most bizarre finishes in quite some time, the Monks from St. Joseph's College scored four unearned runs in the top of the eight inning to hand the Wolverines their second straight loss by the score of 5-1 on Monday, April 26th. Behind 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Wolverines tied the score when Tom MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) singled to center. Andrew Gummow (Brookline, MA) promptly bunted him to second, and MacInnes scored as Will Whittemore (Waltham, MA) ripped a sharp single to left. In the top of the eighth, Whittemore walked the first batter. An attempted sacrifice bunt was foiled for the first out. The next batter walked, but Whittemore came back to strike out the next batter. With two outs and runners on first and second, the next batter hit a routine fly ball to center field to what appeared to be the final out. Unfortunately, the ball was masked by the gymnasium in the background, making it virtually impossible for the outfielders to pick the ball off the bat, so what seemed like a sure out ended up as a base-clearing triple. To add insult to injury the next batter took the very next pitch deep to right center for a two-run homer. The strange ending was no surprise to Coach Smith. "It's something we're all aware of. In fact, I mentioned the very same situation just before the game, making sure our guys would run everything out, especially if it looked like a routine fly ball to center or right. Mike Murphy (Lancaster, MA) always plays right field when we're home, for the simple reason he has had the most experience seeing balls coming off the gym. Tough loss for Will, but we weren't able to give him any run support." Despite recent losses, the Wolverines stand at 26-9 on the season, earning some remarkable victories in recent weeks. Lacrosse Picks up a Victory at Holderness: Bridgton Academy recently traveled to Holderness School for a Jamboree in which they took on the hosts as well as Kimball Union Academy. The games consisted of two twenty minute halfs. The Wolverines won their first game against Holderness 14-3, and then fell to KUA 6-4, playing back to back games. In the first game BA jumped on top 3-0 against Holderness, and after that, never looked back. Sean Igoe (Oceanside, NY) played well in net to collect the win. In the second game, Bridgton saw their reserves play a larger role. Although the Wolverines fell behind early, they were able to battle back and cut the lead to just two, but would come no closer. Following the game Coach Bamann said, "Overall for the day we played well, Chad Graham (Hampton Falls, NH) played very well in his first start of the season. This is a good start and something to build on." On April 8th, BA traveled to Exeter, NH to take on Phillips Exeter Academy, and despite an impressive showing in the second half it was too little-too late for the Wolverines as they fell 10-7. BA got off to a slow start and Exeter took advantage as they ran out to a 5-1 lead in the first half. Sloppy play by the Wolverines allowed the Lions to pull away early on. In the second half BA played much more efficiently but could not close the gap anymore as the final was 10-7. JP Coombe (Annapolis, MD) lead the scoring attack registering four goals to go along with an assist. Kevin Looney (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Colin Palma (Chappaqua, NY) each collected two assists and one goal. Casey Helms (Sandwich, MA) scored one goal and had an assist, and Steve Knezick (Burlington, NJ) was credited with one helper. Sean Igoe (Oceanside, NY) ended the day with nine saves in net.
