Dear ,

Welcome to Spring! The students are back from spring break, and the days are counting down until graduation on May 8th -- although Mr. Gately reminds us to not count the days, but make the days count! Faculty and staff are busy preparing for upcoming spring and summer events, ready to welcome many friends, family, parents, and alumni, back to campus for both Commencement and Reunion Weekend June 4-6th. For those of us not underwater, be sure to enjoy the spring weather. And for those underwater, hang in there, we're sure the sun will head your way soon. A Happy Easter weekend to all.

Here is some more news from campus:

National Media Continues to Focus on Boys' Education: The focus and mission of Bridgton Academy continues to be a hot topic of conversation among many educational and general interest publications. It's no secret - young men in the United States are falling farther and farther behind in the classroom. Males are less likely to graduate from college, more likely to earn lower test scores, and as a whole, continue to struggle academically. BA is striving to be an active participant in the discussion of boys education, and where appropriate, offer our opinions on the benefits and struggles of single sex education at the postgraduate level. We recently responded to an article which ran in the New York Times focusing on this very topic. Want to read more about issues impacting males in the classroom? Be sure to take a minute and look at our WhyPG blog, which is dedicated to the subject.

BA Coach to Present at National Strength and Conditioning Symposium: This April, Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director Joe Sawicki will be a featured presentor at the Maine NSCA Symposium to be held in Portland. Coach Sawicki's presentation is called "Preparing the College Ready Athlete," and he will focus on the trends and tools coaches can employ to close the gap between high school and college athletic preparedness.

October FootballOwn a Piece of BA History: The BA Athletic Department is offering game worn football and baseball jerseys for sale to help raise funds for the purchase of new jerseys next fall.  The white Adidas jerseys show a little wear, but could provide a great conversation piece and a little slice of BA history.  Please contact Assistant Athletic Director, Joe Sawicki for more details at (207) 647-3322, ext. 238 or email jsawicki@bridgtonacademy.org. The price is $50, and jersies are first come, first served.

Dorm Wars ChampsFeeling Bad About Your NCAA Bracket?: Well, think about BA Dorm Wars instead! The final four in Dorm Wars basketball recently squared off. The first semi-final match-up was between Cleaves North and Holt Hall, Cleaves coming away with a 51-44 victory. On Wednesday, Sylvester Hall faced Walker Hall, earning a nail-biting one-point victory with a score of 29-28. The championship game was played last night between Sylvester and Cleaves North. Cleaves North emerged as the ultimate victor, downing Sylvester by a score of 32-37. BA intramurals will wrap up later this month with the always-popular Dorm Wars softball.

Mike CerulloQ&A With a Superbowl Coach - Bridgton Academy recently had the chance to catch up with alumnus Mike Cerullo '86, an assistant coach for the NFL Champion New Orleans Saints. Mike answered a few questions about life in the NFL, memories from BA, and advice for today's Wolverines. Coach Cerullo maintains fond memories about BA to this day. "BA was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Bridgton prepared me for college and life. I cannot say enough great things about the school and faculty when I was there. I have life-long friends to this day from BA, and will always push BA and what they teach to anyone that will listen." October FootballBA Makes News in the NCAA - Two Bridgton alumni, Eric Siegel '09 and Tom McCabe '72, found their names in sports headlines this March. Eric plays hockey at Norwich University. Only a freshman, he has already earned a college championship, as his Norwich team clinched the NCAA Division III Hockey Championship with a 2-1 victory over St. Norbert College. He joins a small family of fellow Wolverines who have earned NCAA titles. Coach Tom McCabe was also recognized by the NCAA, becoming only the 17th coach in Division III lacrosse history to earn 200 wins. Coach McCabe passed this milestone on Tuesday, March 23rd, when he led the Bowdoin College lacrosse team to a 17-10 victory over Keene State College. Congratulations to both Eric and Tom! Soccer RecognitionSoccer Team Hosts Awards Banquet: The tradition of soccer at BA began in 1963. The best team record was previously held by the Class of 1983, who maintained the top place in the record books for twenty-seven years until this fall, when the record was broken by the current Wolverine squad. The 2009-2010 players were honored this past weekend at a sports banquet. Head Coach Kevin Mellon invited members of the '83 team back for the event, and BA was excited to host Coach Bob Doucette, 1983 Captain Mike Neff '83, and teammate Adam Foley '83. Individual awards were presented to Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, MA) - Most Improved, Nick Christensen (Waterville, ME) - "Lunch Pail Award" for being the best everyday hard worker, and both Omar Khartibal (E. Hampstead, NH) and Steve Palumbo (Kingston, NH) shared the Coaches Award. Thank you to the players, parents, and alumni who joined us for this special event.

BasketballBasketball Team Finishes With NEPSAC Tournament - Bridgton Academy traveled to Endicott College for a quarterfinal match up in the NEPSAC Tournament with Brewster Academy on March 3rd. The Wolverines were looking to once again upset the top-ranked Bobcats after their exciting win over Brewster in the Wolverdome the previous week.

In the early going the two teams were closely matched, but Brewster soon pulled away for a convincing 94-59 victory, ending Bridgton's season and their hopes for another NEPSAC title.
Alex Harris (Richmond, CA) came out hot and kept the Wolverines in the ball game early on, but the Bobcats soon closed with a 47-29 lead.In the second half the Bobcats continued to use their athleticism and depth to put the Wolverines away. The Brewster lead ballooned to 30 with over six minutes to play and reached its largest margin at 36 with three minutes to play. It would end with Brewster running away 94-59.

Coach Lesure made the final analysis of the game by saying, "Brewster played very well. Sometimes in these situations one team overwhelms the other. In this case, we had no answers for their attack, to no fault of our players."

Bridgton concludes its season with an overall record of 11-17, but Coach Lesure looks to the remaining quarter of the school year saying, "We have always emphasized the value of the postgraduate year, not the basketball season per se. We take great pride in getting our guys to graduation May 8 and expect to see growth in the classroom, weightroom, and gymnasium during the next two months that typically pass by as quickly as any time period in prep school." The basketball team would like to extend a special thank you to Wes Perkins, the team bus driver, for making the trips this winter safe and enjoyable.

Spring Baseball Season Picks Up Where Fall Left Off - After ending their fall season with a second place finish in the New England Club Baseball Association championships, the Wolverines are back at it as they start up their spring season this month. The season opened with BA traveling to Harvard University for a doubleheader. Unfortunately, in the first game they were denied a victory, as the Crimson erased a 4-1 deficit to come away with a hard-fought 6-4 victory. BA struck first with two runs in the second as Sam Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) doubled home Andrew Gummow  (Brookline, MA) and Tom MacInnes  (Plymouth, MA) who had both singled to open the inning. The Wolverines pushed two more runs across in the next frame as MacInnes doubled to left center chasing home Dustin Brown (East Falmouth, MA) and Gummow. However, the Wolverines were held scoreless for the rest of the game, as Harvard scored twice in the third and fourth innings, an added an insurance run in the sixth to put the game away.

The team was able to bounce back in the second game of the doubleheader with an impressive 8-2 win over the Harvard Crimson. Mike Bullett (Stamford, VT) pitched a complete game, yielding only three hits while striking out six. Injured most of the fall season, Bullett also helped his own cause at the plate with three hits and three runs scored. The BA offense wasted no time getting on the board as they scored three in the first as Tom MacInnes singled home Bullett and Andrew Gummow. Kenny Brock (Burlington, NJ) singled to plate MacInnes with the inning's third run. The Wolverines answered with three more in the third, as MacInnes unloaded a booming triple to the 410 mark in center field, scoring Bullett and Gummow. MacInnes then scored BA's sixth run on an infield out. The fireworks continued in the fifth inning as Kenny Brock blasted a solo home run into Harvard Square to add icing on the cake. Wolverines Take Down Minutemen: Bridgton Academy lacrosse kicked off its Spring season with a trip to UMass Amherst to take on the Minutemen club team. Playing outside for the first time this season, the Wolverines were happy to come away with a 7-6 victory.

Bridgton came out firing, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage, however they allowed UMass back into the game by giving up two unanswered goals to close the first quarter up 3-2. The second quarter was a back and forth battle until Bridgton found the back of the net just before the half to take a 4-2 lead.

Following a halftime speech by former Wolverine and current UMass All-American, Diogo Godoi '04, the Black and Gray scored two quick goals to take their largest lead of the game at 6-2, however four straight goals by UMass over the final 10 minutes tied the game at 6-6 with four minutes to go. Colin Palma (Chappaqua, NY) then found the back of the net for the eventual game winner, as the Bridgton defense was able to hold off UMass for the final four minutes.

Will Janney (Richmond, VA) stopped 11 shots in goal, against a much better UMass team from the fall. Palma lead the offense with three goals and one assist. JP Coombe (Annapolis, MD) had two goals and two assists, Casey Helms (Sandwich, MA) added two goals and an assist and Charlie Stephens (San Francisco, CA) collected an assist.

Coach Bamann was pleased with the effort saying, "For the first game of the season we gave a good effort all around. UMass is much improved since the fall, and our defense played very well. It was great to see some alums, and hear from former players." Art Kell '08, current points leader for the Minutemen varsity, stopped by to watch the Wolverines in action.

Wolverines Finish  Hockey Season, Reflect on Tough Competition - In their final home game of the season, BA dropped another heartbreaker to the New England Stars 4-3. Although the team managed to outshoot the Stars 33-30, they simply ran out of time. Patrick Sen (Niles, IL) and Tad Gold (Oaks Bluff, MA) led the BA offense with a goal and assist each. Colin Hurd (West Tisbury, MA) banged in one for the third BA goal. Overall, it was a great game, where BA continued to battle for each and every puck. The Wolverines wrapped up the season with 15 wins, 24 loses and 1 tie. It was a great year for the boys against some of the toughest teams BA has ever played.
