Dear Parents,
There is bare ground at Bridgton Academy, an odd sight to see in mid-February, and one that possibly points to the significant March snow monsoons that often occur in Northern New England. Only a few short months remain until the Class of 2010 joins the ranks of Bridgton alumni, and as always at BA, the third quarter can often be the hardest push to get through. Every day, these young men are one step closer to their goals, and we look forward to celebrating their collective accomplishments.
Here is some more news from campus:

Campus News:
New Laferriere Chair Nominees Announced: In 2004, the family of Andy Barr '99 created the James "Jake" Laferriere Chair of Excellence in Teaching, an endowment dedicated to awarding the professional development of some of Bridgton's finest faculty. The Chair was created in honor of late Bridgton teacher Jake Laferriere, who had a great impact on Andy's Bridgton experience. The chosen Chair is expected to embody traits Jake was known for, including mastering his/her discipline, fostering academic courage, and showing a genuine concern for the well being of the young men entrusted to their care. The inaugural Laferriere Chair was Mr. Pete Gately, whose tenure will end this fall. BA has now begun the consideration process for Pete's successor. The recently announced nominee pool includes the following faculty members: Eden Dunckel, Phil Goepel, Pete Horne, Drew Inzer, Bob Katz, Dave Lepage, Whit Lesure, Brian Roche '93, Joe Sawicki, and Brad Smith. Nominees will be interviewed this April, with the new Laferriere Chair honoree announced at Commencement this May. Congratulations to these faculty members on their nominations!
A 1942 Perspective - We all know Cleaves Hall, the grand dame of Bridgton Academy, has seen a significant amount of history. What was it like on the dawn of World War II? We recently spoke with Class of '42 alumnus Elliot Lewis, who recalls firsthand the impact of WWII on the Bridgton campus. To read more of Elliot's wonderful story, please click here. Students Produce Video - Danny Alexander '10 and Kevin Colon '10 recently put together a video about why someone should attend Bridgton Academy. The two students did a wonderful job producing the video - please click here to check it out!Admissions Tracks Strongly for Class of 2011: Presidents Day weekend was busy for the BA Admission Office. On Sunday February 14th, the Admissions hosted "Bring Your own (younger) Brother," an overnight program for high school age siblings of current students. Several events were scheduled throughout the afternoon on Sunday, including a Wii tournament for younger siblings who might also be visiting campus. The younger brothers who stayed overnight got to attend classes with their brother the next day.
On President's Day, sixteen families (almost 60 people) visited BA for a Group Information Session which entailed a presentation by Admission Director Chris Webb, a tour of campus, and for some, a meeting with a coach. Mirroring the trend in visits to BA this year, this was the largest group to visit BA in a single day in more than ten years.

Shavar Bernier '06 Finishes College Basketball Career - Recently referred to by his University of Connecticut coach as "Mr. Conn College," Shavar just wrapped up his final game as a Connecticut College Camel. Coach Lesure, Mr. Katz, and Mr. Atwood were able to see Shavar's last two games, played against Bowdoin and Colby College. Shavar, who has served as his team co-captain for the last three years, scored 17 points in the Colby game, and the next night at Bowdoin College, he hit six three point shots and scored 24 points. These last three point field goals allowed Shavar to break the previously held 3 pt. record at Conn. College, sinking 203 during his college career. The last record had stood for over a decade. He also climbed his way into the top ten all-time scoring ranks at the school, accumulating 1,184 points during his four years. Shavar was the Spooner Award winner for the BA Class of 2006, and hopes to graduate this spring. He looks forward to possibly pursuing a career in coaching after graduation, along with continuing to play basketball.
Saddened to Report - Bridgton Academy is saddened to relay news of the passing of alumnus Sean Hanrahan '02. A Sergeant in the United States Army Reserves, Sean received the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. At BA, he was a member of the football team, and well-remembered by his classmates and teachers alike. Our thoughts go out to the Hanrahan family.
Eric Ciano '93 Joins Buffalo Bills - Bridgton alum Eric Ciano has officially joined the Buffalo Bills football organization as a strength and conditioning coordinator. The announcement came from Bills head coach Chan Gailey this February. Eric worked for two years under Coach Gailey at Georgia Tech. "At Georgia Tech he did an unbelievable job in getting our young men bigger, stronger, quicker, and faster through the years," said Coach Gailey.

Wolverine Athletics:
Hockey Wolverines Play Hard as Season Winds Down - On Wednesday, February 3rd, BA travelled to New Hampton where they were unfortunately handed a 4-2 defeat. Tad Gold (Oak's Bluff, MA) and Tom MacInnes (Plymouth, MA) gave BA a quick 2-0 lead in what proved to be a physical, and sometimes chippy contest. Although the Wolverines worked the puck deep and generated great scoring opportunities throughout the entire game, New Hampton took a 3-2 lead in the third, scoring a game-ending open-net goal with just five seconds left in the game.
Two days later, the Wolverines headed to Rockland, MA to take on a the Bay State Breakers. Looking to build on their consistent play from Wednesday, the Wolverines came out flying. Captain Kyle O'Connell (Bridgewater, MA) set the tempo from the first shift when he handed out a devastating hit. Jake Donahue (Swampscott, MA) followed suit with a few crushing hits of his own. Despite the physical play, after one period, BA was down 2-1. The second period started a little slower than the first. The Wolverines struggled with the high tempo pace the Breakers brought and found themselves down 5-1. It was the third period that turned out to be magic for BA, scoring five additional goals and beating the Breakers 7-5.
The following week, the Wolverines travelled to Stanstead College in Quebec and were soundly defeated 7-0. With a limited roster due to illness and injury, BA struggled to find their game and Stanstead had no problem capitalizing on the opportunities that came their way. "Guys like Dave Stevens and Pat Thornton were sick as dogs and still came out and gave their all. We just didn't have it today" said Assistant Coach Mike Meserve.
A two week break gave the Wolverines some time to recuperate both mentally and physically, returning to regular season play on February 20th. It was the third time this season that BA would challenge the Rice High School AAA team, the first two meetings ending in Rice victories. The first period was back and forth, ending in a 0-0 tie with Rice outshooting BA 5-3. Nate Potter (Hartford, VT) easily turned aside the first 5 shots he faced. The second period saw Rice down a man and BA moving the puck well on the power play. Tad Gold (Oak Bluff, MA) gave BA a 1-0 lead after a Nick Billingham (Oak Bluff, MA) feed. The Bridgton lead was short-lived, as Rice tied the score on a power play goal of their own. It was the third period finish that again led the Wolverines to victory. Bridgton fired 12 shots on goal and only allowed 1, earning a well-deserved win over Rice AAA.
Yesterday, the Wolverines took on Kents Hill School in their second-to-last home game of the season. Bridgton Academy limited Kent's Hill School to 14 shots thanks to great end zone defense and outstanding goaltending. Goalie Ian Edwards (Linden, MI) was outstanding the few times he was tested and picked up his third shutout of the season. Captain Kyle O'Connell (Bridgewater, MA) and the rest of the Wolverine defense physically dominated Kent's Hill for the majority of the game, ending with a 2-0 shutout. Overall, it was a solid performance by the Wolverines and their 6th win out of 8 games. BA will complete their season against the New England Stars this Saturday at 4:00 PM at Bridgton Ice Arena. The end their season on Sunday, with a noontime game in Dracut, MA.
Baseball Players Honored - Four members of the Bridgton Academy baseball team were selected to the New England Club Baseball Association's Northern Division All-Star team for the 2009 fall season. Highlighting the list was Will Whittemore (Waltham, MA) who was named Pitcher of the Year. Will was 4-0 in conference play, tossing shutouts against Merrimack College and Boston University, while posting an incredible 1.20 ERA. Teammate Tad Gold (Vineyard Haven, MA) was named Offensive Player of the Year. Tad, who played left and centerfield, hit .490 including four-hit games against University of New England and against Northeastern University in the championship game. Gold had at least one hit in every game except one and eight times had multiple hit games as he led the Wolverines in batting average and runs scored (17). Tom MacInnes (Plymouth, MA), the third Wolverine named to the All-Star squad, was selected as an outfielder. Tom opened the conference season with a three-hit, thirteen strikeout pitching performance against the University of Maine. He finished the year 4-1, losing only to Northeastern University in the championship game. When not pitching, Tom played centerfielder and finished second behind Gold in hitting with a .488 average with nine multiple hit games. Rounding off the list was Sam Stauber (Cumberland, ME) who played virtually every game at second, although he was the winning pitcher in the second game against the University of Maine. Sam hit .483 with seven multiple hit games, while solidifying an excellent infield defense. In their first fall season, the Wolverines finished with an overall record of 16-2, undefeated the NECBA's Northern Division, while losing their only game in the championship final, 9-6, to Northeastern University. Did you miss seeing the baseball team in action this Fall? The new spring schedule has now been released. Wolverines Suffer Losses, Bounce Back With Defeat over #1 Seed - Competing in the National Prep Invitational Tournament at the University of Rhode Island, the Bridgton Academy Wolverines took on the Canarias Basketball Academy in their first game. Bridgton got off to a slow start and overcame deficits of 9-0 and 11-2 to post perhaps their best win of the season, 75-58. Implementing multiple defenses after falling behind early, the Wolverines were able to battle their way back into the contest thanks to hot shooting. Chance Jones (Knoxville, TN) hit a three at the buzzer to take a 38-37 lead at halftime. Bridgton carried that momentum into the second half as they quickly extended the lead to five, and never looked back. The Wolverines had one of their best shooting performances of the season as ten players got in on the scoring and BA never trailed in the half. The Black and Gray broke the game open in the final six minutes as the lead increased to double digits. Alex Harris (Richmond, CA) lead all scorers with 28 points, Jones finished with 17.
The next three games would prove to be challenging for Bridgton. In their second game of the Prep Tournament at URI, the Wolverines faced off against Northfield Mount Hermon, suffering a 80-58 loss. In the early goings the two teams exchanged baskets, but the inside force and outside shooting of NMH was too much for Bridgton as the Hoggers opened up a 20 point halftime lead. Bridgton was never able to seriously respond with an offensive attack of their own.
After returning to Maine, Bridgton travelled into the Northern reaches of the Pine Tree State to take on rival MCI. The Huskies broke open a 12 point halftime lead to thump the Wolverines 91-63. Paul Dick (Belfast, Ireland) and Alex Harris (Richmond, CA) led the offense with 22 points apiece.
The struggles continued for BA on February 13th when the Wolverines their third loss in a row, this time at the hands of the South Kent Cardinals, 80-59. The Cardinals used decisive runs during each half to pull away from BA. Ruben Kanya (Hamilton, Ontario) led the Wolverine offense with a season high 16 points. Coach Lesure praised Kanya's efforts afterward saying, "Our toughest guy responded to today's challenge. He was really good on the defensive end too." After the game, Coach Lesure remained positive. "Sometimes during a season you have to acknowledge where you're at... we're not very good right now but I think we're closer to beating good teams than our guys might realize. Part of my job is helping us break through to a higher level of play in the next two weeks. I am very confident we can achieve that and pursue the championship aggressively as we have in the past."
Taking a page out of the University of Connecticut's playbook, where an assistant coach replaces the Hall of Fame head coach due to illness, the Wolverines took on Phillips Exeter with assistant Bob Holden at the helm. Bridgton, slumping of late, was looking for a much needed NEPSAC victory. The Wolverdome had a different feel early Wednesday evening, without the animated Lesure patrolling the sidelines. Holden used his calm demeanor to guide the Wolverines to an 80-69 victory.
In a game that was closer than the final score indicated, the Wolverines were able to snap a three game losing streak, and in doing so Holden picked up his first career win. Following the game the assistant coach said, "I got the call about 10am this morning, but thought I was being set up. When I showed up for shoot around and Whit (Lesure) and Tim (Atwood) weren't here I was looking around for them hiding somewhere." Eight players got on the board for BA, including six with five points or more. Harris finished with a game high 26, Paul Dick (Belfast, Ireland) added 17, Chance Jones (Knoxville, TN) had 15, with 12 coming in the first half by way of 4 three pointers. Holden kept it simple with the players telling them before the game, "It's your team, go out there and play like one."
This past weekend, Bridgton traveled to Lee Academy for a non conference match up, before entering their final week of NEPSAC regular season play. The Wolverines were looking to pick up consecutive victories for just the third time this season. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, as Bridgton ended with a 75-69 loss.
Bridgton's momentum changed in a big way last night, as a season long journey of putting a complete game together carried the Wolverines to an exciting upset of NEPSAC #1 ranked Brewster Academy, 70-67 last night at the Wolverdome. After a sluggish start which saw the visitors bolt to a 13-4 lead within the first five minutes, the home squad played some inspired basketball to get even at the half on a 3 point bucket by Ruben Kanya (Hamilton, Ontario). The teams went into the locker rooms deadlocked at 28. Bridgton started fast in the second half to take their first lead at 33-28. The last ten minutes saw more back and forth play with the Wolverines responding to each Brewster run. During one stretch the two teams traded several long range bombs that had the overflowing ancient hoop hall rocking.
BA secured the lead for the last time in the final two minutes and withstood the full court pressure of the Bobcats with Alex Harris (Richmond, CA) hitting four clutch free throws to seal the upset victory. Harris was outstanding all night leading all scorers with 29 points but also handling the ball and setting up his teammates for big shots of their own. One of those shots was an athletic put-back by Jeff Schmeltz (Pascoag, RI) off a Harris miss with 23 seconds to go that gave the Wolverines a 4 point cushion. Kevin Anthony (Columbus, OH) chipped in with 9 points of his own in his first start late in the regular season and added 6 rebounds to the hustling Bridgton defense.
The Bridgton effort was markedly improved over many performances to date and Coach Lesure had a hard time pin-pointing any specific area of play in his comments afterward. "We played very well, as consistently as we have against any team this year." Details on the 2010 NEPSAC Tournament will be emailed as soon as available.
