Dear ,

Bridgton Academy is now officially blanketed in snow. Winter solstice has come and gone, and the last week has seen single digit temperatures and wind that leaves some of us wishing for tropical climates. Campus is quiet now that the Class of 2010 has returned home for the winter break. Final exams are completed, the first semester is behind us, and the faculty are left with piles of papers and tests awaiting the trusty red pen.

Best wishes to you and your family during this Holiday Season. Please note that the next e-news will be sent in late January. In the meantime, here is some recent news from the campus on the hill:
Campus News:

Students Deliver Presents to Needy Families - The class of 2010 raised over $400 to help ensure gifts under a the Christmas trees for a few deserving families from the Bridgton area. Jonathan Price, Jarrell Greene, Tyler Hannon, John Despres, Howard Holmes, and Chad Graham put in the time and effort to make this project a success. The group met with the students of the families at Stevens Brook Elementary and then worked the dorms to raise the money. They then headed down to Reny's and a few other stores downtown to do the shopping. The students then finished up by wrapping the gifts and delivering them to the school. A heartwarming project and one the guys will remember for years to come. (Pictured are L-R Chad Graham, Jonathan Price, and Tyler Hannon)

HypnosisHypnotist Demonstrates Power of Positive Thinking - In what many young alumni recall as the most entertaining Chapel of the year, the Class of 2010 recently experienced the performance of hypnotist Dan LeRosa. Over a dozen brave young men took the stage during Mr. LeRosa's show. Along with lots of laughs, the hypnotist brought a message of the importance of positive thinking and the benefits that we find when we believe in ourselves.

Wolverine Athletics:

Dec BasketballBasketball Team Falls to MCI - The Bridgton Academy come back attempt fell just short during their last game before the holiday break against Maine Central Institute. After trailing the MCI Huskies for most of the night, the Wolverines had a second half run, but ultimately came up on the wrong end of the 74-72 score.

In the early minutes of the game, MCI mounted a 23-6 run, growing their first half lead to 13 points with 6:37 to play in the half. Dashaun Wiggins (Bronx, NY) kept the hosts within striking distance as he scored seven straight points to cut the lead to 30-22 at the half.

In the second half Bridgton was able to trim the lead even further, just to see MCI expand it to 18 points with just over six minutes remaining. The Wolverines used an 11-1 run to bring the lead to single digits. With under one minute remaining it was a two possession game. An offensive rebound and chance for a three point play by Ruben Kanya (Hamilton, Ontario) brought the Wolverines within three, 69-66, with 40.1 seconds remaining. The foul shot was not converted and MCI came away with the rebound. Two late three pointers by Chance Jones (Knoxville, TN) could not make up the difference as the Huskies knocked down their foul shots.

Coach Lesure, whose Wolverines shot just 15-30 from the foul line, said "We just ran out of time." He went on to give credit to the MCI saying, "they are a good team, they are always well coached and did a good job building the lead." Speaking of his team Lesure said, "I'm very proud of us for sticking around and giving ourselves a chance to make a run at it." The basketball team returns from break with an away game versus Norte Dame Prep on January 16th.

Football CombineStrong Turnout at Football Recruiting Showcase Despite Snowy Weather -What is fall football in New England without a little snow? After several weeks of practice, the 2009-2010 football squad woke up to the first major storm of the year on the scheduled day of their annual Black & Grey Recruiting Showcase. Fortunately, the team was playing at an indoor facility, and the weather did little to deter visiting college coaches and recruiters. Coaches from a number of schools came up for the display, and after watching the players on the field were able to meet one-on-one with many members of the Class of 2010 football team. The showcase is always a positive event for Bridgton football, and not only provides exposure for Bridgton players, but also the opportunity to learn about different college options that may be available to them.
