    reality

The Barkley is currently involved in the development of a reality television show concept based on our staff, clientele and, of course, our pet guests. The character-based series promises to keep both animal lovers and non-animal lovers continually entertained and wanting more. Stay tuned for more details. We'll be back after these messages.

Small Dog Day Camp Starts OCTOBER 1ST!
    smalldogs

FINALLY......a new SMALL DOG Day Camp will be open starting October 1st. This "special-sized" play area is perfect for dogs 20 pounds and under and is isolated from big dogs with big attitudes. For more information or reservations, please call our front desk during normal business hours.

    WOOFSTOCK - September 27, 2009
    woofstock

Woofstock is Northeast Ohio's largest (and coolest!) one-day outdoor festival for dogs and their people. Join The Barkley in all of the day's fun, activities and contests. Make sure to team up with your pooch and friends by collecting pledges for the Trivia Trail Dog Walk (approximately 1.5 miles). Woofstock is an annual event which helps raise funds for the homeless animals of Geauga County's Animal Rescue facility, Rescue Village.

    New Vaccine for Canine Flu
    healthupdate

The canine flu virus is a relatively new illness for dogs - similar to the influenza virus in humans. It is spread through direct contact and symptoms include coughing, runny nose, and sneezing. Although there are currently very few cases in Northeast Ohio, prevention is always the best way to ensure the canine virus remains a non-issue in our area.  Please discuss your dog's candidacy for the vaccine with your veterinarian.  It has been tested on thousands of dogs of all ages with no reported side effects.  The full vaccine consists of two initial injections and then an annual booster.  We do not require this under our vaccination policy; however, because there are little to no downsides to the vaccine, we highly recommend it (as a precautionary measure) to all dogs who may be exposed to others via vet offices, groomers, day camps, parks, kennels, sidewalks, or other canine populated places.

    Barkley Web Cams Secure
    webcams

As of September 1st, our Web Cam monitoring feature has been replaced by a password protected system which restricts viewing to those who have current pet guests utilizing our facility. This not only frees up bandwidth and increases speed for users, but more importantly, this change provides an additional layer of safety and security for our clients and their precious pets.

    CLEO Needs You
    cleofinal

Cleo lost her home when her owners, two disabled sisters, lost their home to foreclosure. As a result, S.A.F.E. (Safety for Animals and Families in Emergencies) rescued Cleo and placed her at The Barkley, where she is temporarily being cared for.  Cleo now needs to find a loving home. She loves people and would do best in a home without other dogs due to dog induced trauma that she exprienced earlier in her life. She is believed to be about 4 years old. If you or anyone you know is interested in finding a home for Cleo, please contact Mitch Shaheen at (440) 248- BARK.

    Fall Dog Walking Tips
    falltips
During the Fall season, we must be aware of certain safety issues which may come upon us as we walk our dogs. First, less leaves on the trees means less camouflage for the forest animals to hide. As a result, be prepared for your dog to run or bolt after something he or she can now see more clearly and from greater distances! In addition, pay attention when walking near waterways to prevent any thin-ice drownings, which are common at this time of year. Secondly, watch out for acorns (poisonous to dogs) that have fallen on your path. Thirdly, twilight comes earlier (and Fall is hunting season), so dress yourself and your dog in bright colored clothes to avoid any unfortunate hunting accidents. And lastly, Fall tends to bring more wind, rain and wet conditions with it, so it is very helpful to teach your dog to sit just inside the door when he or she comes in from outside so that you can wipe his or her muddy paws before he or she proceed further into the house.
