September, 2011

Several months ago, LCBH accepted a 107-year-old client.  The client, her son and daughter-in-law were referred to us by Congressman Gutierrez's office because they were being improperly evicted due to foreclosure.  They had  lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years.  The case has settled, and the terms are sealed, but we can tell you that they have moved in to their new apartment with the assistance of the Resurrection Place.  It is a much more livable situation for them, and the settlement they received will help them pay the rent differential. It took the combined efforts of our legal and supportive services staff along with Chicago's Senior Services Department and Universidad Popular to keep this elderly Hispanic family housed.  John-Paul Beals, and his Social Services intern Alexis visited them in their new apartment and took pictures. The visit was capped off with grandma asking Alexis to bend over for a kiss on the cheek.  Sometimes the best thank yous are unspoken.

For those of you who are very familiar with eviction court, you will appreciate this rarity:  Recently, Gerard achieved a Summary Judgment.   Our client is disabled, with a Housing Choice Voucher, and received a 30-day notice from her management company citing lease violations.  The notice went in to great detail, but the activities and behaviors cited did not rise to the level of a violation of the written lease terms.  This resulted in an outright win for the tenant!

We would not be able to represent these challenged tenants if it weren't for the resources you provide through your steadfast commitment to LCBH and your dedication to the cause of low-income renters.  Please allow us to honor you on September 22 at our Annual Reception and Awards Ceremony. It's just around the corner.

Is it on your calendar yet?
