January 2010

Greetings!
It is hard to believe that the first month of 2010 is already drawing to a close. As a volunteer, you helped us make a difference for Chicago's low-income tenants throughout 2009, and we hope you continue to dedicate time to LCBH all through 2010. In fact, volunteers, interns and fellows donated almost 5,000 hours to LCBH in 2009! All the ways you help LCBH matter - money, time, and spreading the word about what we do - and we never take this support for granted.
January has been very hectic, but the pressure of all the new cases was eased by having an AOD volunteer almost every day. We hope this trend continues into February and throughout 2010.
Along with the support of attorney volunteers, we are pleased to welcome three new legal interns to LCBH for the 2010 Spring Semester. Donteé Brown is a 3L from John Marshall who is assisting Gerard and me in AOD. Colin Glynn is a 2L from Northwestern who is working with staff attorney Mark Swartz in the ever-growing Foreclosure Program. And finally, Mike Tuman is a 2L from John Marshall who is helping staff attorney Keri Lindsay in the Affordable Housing Preservation Program. We hope you get a chance to meet each of these wonderful new members of the LCBH team.

Volunteers of the Month
Kate Steffy & Leah Weiss
Kate Steffy and Leah Weiss of Paul Hastings LLP are newer volunteers, but they have quickly become diligent and proactive supporters of LCBH.
In December, Kate and Leah took on their first start to finish eviction case. They have been working closely with their client and are marching steadily closer to reaching a favorable settlement for her. In addition to the time they are investing in this matter, they went out of their way to help LCBH by organizing the first Eviction Defense training session of 2010 at their firm.
Thank you Kate and Leah for your generous support of LCBH!

Volunteer News and Notes
+ Coming Soon! For those of you who handle start-to-finish eviction cases, you will soon have access to our case management system. You will have a login i.d. and a password so you can access your case. This will enable you to upload documents, read and add case notes, update court dates, etc.
+ Brown Bag Lunch: the next one will be at LCBH on March 10th at 12:30 p.m. Please RSVP to cewing@lcbh.org.
+ Want to share your AOD war stories? Want to get to know more attorneys in Chicago dedicated to pro bono legal service? Come network with your fellow LCBH volunteers. We are going to kick off a floating happy hour next month. The plan is to keep it relaxed and no frills - no reservations, no tickets, no need to RSVP. Just meet at the designated watering hole at the given time and date. The first one will be on Wednesday, February 24th at 5:30 p.m. at Plymouth Restaurant & Bar, 327 S. Plymouth Ct. (next to the CBA).

Training Sessions
The first official training session of 2010 was on January 25th at Paul Hastings LLP. Thanks to the hard work of Kate Steffy and Leah Weiss (see adjacent column), we had a good turnout and the benefit of a spacious conference room and great technology.
We are always looking to schedule more training sessions and do not mind bringing our show on the road. Hosting a training session at your firm is an easy way to avoid the elements, encourage your colleagues to learn more about LCBH, and to help promote pro bono involvement. Plus, we know your tech support will make sure we get everything running smoothly, and it is nice to get out of the office!
