Volunteer of the Month:  Mike Stone

Mike Stone of the Cook County Assessor's Office started volunteering with LCBH over the summer.  Since shadowing at the tail end of July, Mike has been proactive about helping out with AOD and just took on his first start-to-finish eviction case.  We value his calm, friendly assistance and want to thank him for joining us, and to wish him luck with his first full case!
Greetings!

Welcome to fall!  The weather has truly changed, school is in full swing, and the May graduates just got their Bar Exam results.  And we are as busy as ever here at LCBH.

We can already see how the drop in the temperature is affecting our clients and our overall case load.  It seems that each day, more and more tenants are coming to us for help.  Thankfully, we have a whole new host of in-office volunteers to help us.  A number of recent law school graduates have started helping out on a regular basis; some are volunteering while looking for positions and some are deferred associates who will begin working at firms in the spring.  We are enjoying the new energy in the office and are getting used to lots of new faces (we have a number of social services and paralegal interns as well!).

These new volunteers highlight the value of our existing volunteers.  Your experience with LCBH and the cases is a great asset and we truly appreciate your help.  We hope to see more of all of you over at the Daley Center and at our Brown Bag Lunches.  And don't forget the upcoming Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception!

October 8th:  LCBH's Annual Awards Ceremony & Reception
The date is fast approaching for this event in honor of you, our volunteers.  Please RSVP, and remember that you are our guest.  For friends, colleagues and family, tickets are available online and at the door.  We hope to see you there!

Training Sessions
Tell your friends, mark your calendars - we are conducting two training sessions on eviction law and procedure, along with an overview of all of our pro bono opportunities in the coming weeks.  The first session is scheduled for October 12th at 1:30 p.m. and the second is set for October 27th (during Pro Bono Week!) at 3 o'clock p.m.  Please note that neither session will be at LCBH, but both firms hosting have indicated a willingness to welcome outside attorneys.  Email me if you are interested in attending, and feel free to pass along my contact information to interested colleagues.
Brown Bag Lunch Sessions
Our first Volunteer Brown Bag Lunch was on Wednesday, September 23rd at LCBH's office.  It was attended by a number of LCBH staff, several of our new in-office volunteers, and a couple of existing AOD volunteers.  As October is a very hectic month, the next session will likely be in early November.  Please contact us with suggestions for topics and dates.

Don't forget to contact me if you would like to try out opportunities beyond AOD and start-to-finish eviction cases - we are happy to accommodate your varied interests.  And please remember that as an LCBH Volunteer, you are invited as our guest to our Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception on October 8th at Wildman Harrold; please call or email either me or Sarah Ryan (312.784.3512; sryan@lcbh.org) to RSVP.

Sincerely,
