As summer draws to a close and schools across the city open their doors to new and returning students, at LCBH we are getting ready for a busy fall.  But first, we must thank you, our volunteers, for your help this summer.  With vacations planned and events galore, the summer months are a tricky time to ask for help, but when we asked for your time, you came through.
Along with the help of volunteers, we were fortunate enough to have a wonderful group of interns and fellows this summer.  They came to us from across the country and represented a wide variety of law schools and undergraduate institutions.  Each one worked hard and helped to infuse the office with energy and innovation.

Looking ahead, this fall is going to be very busy for us - we have our annual Awards Ceremony in October, our first Brown Bag Lunch in September, and training sessions are currently being scheduled for September and October - so keep an eye on your email, and be sure to update your calendar with the dates below!
Brown Bag Lunch Series

September - Brown Bag Lunch with Paul Bernstein, LCBH's Legal Director

As mentioned in our last Volunteer Newsletter, we are kicking off a new Brown Bag Lunch Series in September.  The first one is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23rd at 12:30 p.m. (at LCBH, 100 W. Monroe, Suite 1800).  To suggest topics for discussion and to R.S.V.P. please send an email to

Volunteers of the Month
Another Victory at Latham & Watkins

For the second month in a row, we are bestowing this title on a deserving team of attorneys from Latham & Watkins LLP.

Since November of 2008, Ms. Norah Cooney and Ms. Meghan McCall have been working to protect the rights of an LCBH client who faced unfair treatment and ultimately eviction due to his disability and willingness to be a vocal advocate for his rights as a tenant.

Throughout nearly 10 months of litigation, Ms. Cooney and Ms. McCall provided patient, diligent assistance to the client and were able to reach a favorable settlement agreement with a notoriously stubborn landlord's attorney.  We wish to thank them for their hard work and congratulate them on their well-deserved success!

Annual Awards Ceremony & Reception

We hope you will join us on Thursday, October 8, 2009 for LCBH's Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception.  The event will take place from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Wildman Harrold, 225 W. Wacker Drive.  Please go here for more details.
Volunteer Survey

There is still time left to complete the volunteer survey!  If you have not already completed the survey, please take a few minutes to do so here.  Your feedback will help us improve our Pro Bono Program and plan for the future.
Training Sessions

I have scheduled a training session for new volunteers on Wednesday, September 9th at our office.  The session will cover the basics of eviction law and procedure, touch briefly on Fair Housing law, and review our Pro Bono Program.  Feel free to spread the word to any attorneys you believe may be interested.  Also, do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to schedule a training session at your firm.
Thanks for your continuing support of LCBH.  Don't forget to mark your calendar for all of our upcoming events - particularly our Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception on October 8th!
