May/2009
Greetings!

As May draws to a close and we honor the men and women who have served our country on Memorial Day, we find that warmer weather and endless neighborhood festivals have arrived - finally, it is summer in Chicago.  In addition to the general fervor that accompanies this time of year, LCBH becomes a hive of activity as summer interns and fellows arrive to learn and offer their experience and skill.

We are thankful for the assistance our summer staff provides, but summer is also when we see an increase in the number of evictions filed.  With the bitterness of Chicago winter behind us, landlords' concerns about turning tenants out into the cold dissipate.  And the warmer temperatures provide the Office of the Cook County Sheriff the opportunity to catch up on enforcing orders of possession that were delayed by temperature restrictions or the moratorium brought on by the foreclosure crisis.

We thus need, and look forward to, your continued dedication and support of LCBH, and we hope you get a chance to meet and work with our fabulous summer staff.
 Volunteer of the Month
Reid Huefner, Kirkland & Ellis LLP
Reid began volunteering in late March and since then has been helping AOD on an almost weekly basis, along with taking on a star-to-finish eviction case!  He has been a huge help and we are so happy to count him as an LCBH Volunteer.

Meet our Summer Staff!

This summer we welcome two PILI (Public Interest Law Initiative) fellows - recent law school graduates who will dedicate part of their summer to LCBH as they prepare to take the Illinois Bar Examination:  Anthony Borich, who will graduate this week from Harvard Law School, and begin working with Jenner & Block this fall; and Robert Clagg is a new graduate of Emory University School of Law and will soon be a new associate at Sidley Austin LLP

Also working with LCBH this summer are several interns:  Shäna Caldwell worked with LCBH in the fall of 2008 and is back for more as a PILI intern after finishing her second year at the John Marshall Law School; Heidi Jund, also of the John Marshall Law School, continues with LCBH after working with us throughout her spring semester; and Kevin McKenzie just finished his first year at Northwestern University School of Law and is working with LCBH through a student-funded fellowship program.

We also expect to benefit from the assistance of new volunteers:  Danielle Hoffmann, a new graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, will be volunteering with our Tenants in Foreclosure Intervention Project (TFIP) as she prepares to take the July administration of the Illinois Bar Examination; and later this summer Julie Freeman, a student of the University of Iowa Law School, will be volunteering with LCBH upon completing her clerkship with a judge in the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
