5 Things to Look for in a Grant Consultant

Insights for you and your organization

You see a new grant that would be perfect for your organization. You get your boss on board, study the RFP, fire up your laptop... and then realize that developing the proposal is more complex than you thought. You need help. You start Googling "grant writers" and "grant consultants." And then you wonder, "How do I choose the right one?"

This article is designed to help you know what to look for in a grant consultant. You need someone competent, obviously. But how do you evaluate competence in someone you've never worked with? And what else is important?

We offer five criteria that will help you recognize and choose a good grant consultant: availability, experience, skill, resourcefulness and "tough love." Someone who meets all five criteria should save you time and energy, and provide expertise, support and direction. And the best consultant might not be a "someone"--a consultant with a team approach can offer special advantages, especially with the first three criteria.

As you conduct your search, look for a consultant...

Meet our new associates

GrantProse is pleased to introduce three new associates--Sally Wade, Dave McArthur and Ian Verhaeghe. Meet them below, and visit our website for their complete profiles. Welcome to the GrantProse team!

Sally Wade is an associate and project coordinator with GrantProseBefore joining us she was senior grants administrator at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, where she increased grant and foundation revenue from under 1% to 23% of annual operating revenue. Sally's career includes stints as grants program manager for the Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina, executive director of the state's first public education foundation, and a member of the first Governor's Office of Citizen Affairs, where she helped found a one-on-one volunteer program for at-risk youth and worked to establish a statewide network of one-on-one programs. Sally is an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Dave McArthur is an associate and project coordinator at GrantProse. Prior to joining us, Dave was Director of Research at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Education, where he helped faculty find research-grant opportunities and write proposals to major federal agencies and educational foundations. Dave also served as program director at NSF's Division of Undergraduate Education, where he developed research programs and conducted reviews of proposals. He has also been an active researcher. While at the RAND Corporation, he led NSF and U.S. Department of Education projects that developed and assessed intelligent tutoring systems. Dave received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Toronto.

Ian Verhaeghe is an associate and lead research analyst with GrantProse. Before joining us, Ian was a grants and information officer with Tearfund, a London-based NGO. He was stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, developing grant proposals and obtaining funding for humanitarian projects in conflict-affected areas. Rural Center to Announce New Grant Cycle

The Rural Center is preparing to announce a new cycle for Rural Community Mobilization grants to fund collaborative workforce strategies leading to job placement. These grants target dislocated workers or other unemployed/underemployed individuals. Eligible applicants are public and nonprofit entities (e.g., community colleges, workforce boards, community-based nonprofits) involved in workforce development in one or more of North Carolina's 85 rural counties.

A total of $650,000 is allocated for this cycle. The one-year grants will begin April 2013, at a maximum of $90,000 each. To receive email notification of this grant opportunity, contact Michael Aheron, Sr. Program Associate of Workforce Development.

Grant Reviewers Needed

Several federal agencies have open calls for reviewers. Serving as a reviewer for grant proposals is a good way to learn about grant programs, funding agencies and how to strengthen your own proposals.

The U.S. Department of Education is recruiting peer reviewers for its Race to the Top District competition (see Grant Alerts, below). Reviewers need to be available for training in Washington, DC, October 22-23, and have expertise in areas relevant to the competition.

The Employment and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor is building a diverse pool of grant panelists to serve on a continuous basis. Potential panelists will have expertise in a range of areas: workforce development, apprenticeship and training programs, human resources strategies and more.

The Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is seeking health professionals to serve as grant reviewers. Areas of expertise include health professions training, HIV/AIDS, rural health and more.
