Food Deserts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service provides a Food Desert Locator that allows users to view census tract-level statistics on population groups with low access to healthy food. Mapping the entire United States, the locator offers a spatial view of low-income neighborhoods with high concentrations of people who are far from a grocery store.
The Condition of Education 2012
The National Center for Education Statistics has released The Condition of Education 2012, which summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report presents 49 indicators on the status and condition of education, in addition to a closer look at high schools in the United States over the past 20 years. SAM to Replace CCRTo streamline the process of doing business with the government, the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) system is being discontinued. CCR and seven other federal procurement systems, as well as the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, are migrating into the new System for Award Management, or SAM. Vendors will log into one system to manage a single record, and federal agencies will use SAM as a sole source for pre-award information. Phase I of the move will be occur by the end of July (instead of May 29 as originally planned). Further information is available through SAM, as well as CCR.

Despite ongoing cuts to federal discretionary grant programs, the National Science Foundation (NSF) maintains adequate funding for research-based grant programs that promote transformative learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. In an April workshop at the American Educational Research Association's annual meeting, NSF program officers offered numerous tips on securing agency funding for STEM education. NSF comprises seven directorates that support science and engineering research and education. Each directorate supervises divisions offering 5-15 grant programs each.
