Department of Education Grant Funding in 2012

Insights for you and your organization to plan ahead

The Department of Education only lists the upcoming deadlines of grants for programs that have officially announced request for proposals, but there are many programs that are not yet announced. The Department also publishes grant funding forecasts, but this listing is missing several programs. What is the status of big grant opportunities for this year, such as Race to the Top?

According to legislation enacted by Congress, there are grant funds not included in the Department's grant forecasts. Within the U.S. FY 2012 budget, there are funds for the Race to the Top, Investing in Innovation, and Magnet Schools Assistance programs that are equal to the funds apportioned in FY 2011. While there are funds for the Teacher Incentive Fund, these funds compared to FY 2011 amount to a cut of about $99,000,000 or 25%. In the same comparison, the Striving Readers program is down $17,000,000 or about 8.5%. And the College Pathways and Accelerated Learning program is cut completely. Further, funding for the Race to the Top program is made available by this legislation on July 1st, 2012.

While much information is still not yet available from the Department's grants forecast, there are a few things worth noting. The estimated date of the request for proposals for the Investing in Innovation grant is March 13th and the estimated deadline is June 7th. The estimated date of the request for proposals for the Promise Neighborhoods grant is April 30th and the estimated deadline is July 23rd.
