Congratulations!

Congratulations to the North Carolina New Schools Project (NCNSP) for winning the Transition to Teaching grant competition!

While this was not a grant proposal that GrantProse had the opportunity to assist you with, we are glad to highlight the success of your proposal, entitled "Innovative Pathways to STEM Teaching Careers." The purpose of this program is to help school districts throughout the state recruit highly qualified and licensed STEM teachers. To this end, NCNSP will offer tuition-free licensure preparation courses to selected college graduates who are STEM majors and who express interest in teaching. This alternative licensure pathway will encourage 48 teachers per year to enter school districts throughout the state that have the highest rates of under-qualified teachers. This is a great program and we're proud that NCNSP is bringing it to our state.

DOD SBIR/STTR Training

Want access to federal funding for R&D from the Department of Defense?

The Small Business and Technology Development Center is offering training sessions on how to prepare successful SBIR/STTR grant proposals for the Department of Defense. While we have not attended this training and therefore cannot attest to its quality, we are bringing it to your attention because it is a niche opportunity that you may be interested in. According to their website, this training is for "technology companies in IT, engineering, energy, and educational software, biotech, medical devices, diagnostics, and health IT."

For more information, please see their website at http://www.sbtdc.org/events/dod/index.htm. And, if you do attend, please let us know if you enjoyed it.

Grants Digest

In this new feature of the newsletter, we will draw your attention to interesting resource material that we have found on the Internet. The topics that we organize for the Digest will be ones having general interest to grant-writing professionals as well as consumer agencies that may contract with such individuals. We will introduce you to the topic with some observations of our own, and then direct you to some Internet links where you can find more discussion. Community service is an area that we like to emphasize in the GrantProse business model, and we plan to continue the Digest for this purpose.

Topic: Should grant-writers be paid by the hour, by the project, or a commission based on the value of the grant?

At GrantProse, we charge by the hour for our work and do not work on the basis of receiving a commission from the grant award. Estimating how many hours we are likely to work for a client on a project, we typically set a fixed-price, upper limit which reflects the limit of how much the client may be obligated to pay. Within the boundaries of the hourly rate and this upper limit, we expect to complete the project and satisfy the client. If we are able to complete the project in fewer hours than estimated for the upper limit of the contract, the client pays only for the hours expended. If the task appears that it will require many more hours than were estimated, we and the client will write a "change order" and renegotiate the contract. In contrast to this form of hourly billing, among grant-writing professionals the work-for-commission scheme is generally viewed as unethical with disadvantages for both the grant-writer and contracting agency. For more discussion on this topic, here are some Internet links which offer perspectives on the issue.
