Workshop Series on Successful Grant Writing

Want to learn how find, write and manage grants? GrantProse, Inc. conducts a series of high quality grant writing workshops for a reasonable cost.

The presenter, Dr. Carruthers, and GrantProse associates will instruct a "systemic" approach to writing grants--an approach that can be used time and again with small and large grants from funding sources as varied as federal, state, local, foundation, corporation, professional associations and other sources. Central to Dr. Carruthers' system is the logic model. Dr. Carruthers will show how a well organized logic model provides the foundation to all major elements of a grant proposal. And, if you've ever struggled with writing a goal statement or those pesky SMART objectives, he will show you an easy way to tackle these elements.

Previous attendees have consistently rated this program with high marks; we're proud of the feedback that we've been getting. Compliments about the program include:

"It is better than any other grant writing I have taken...even better than Duke."   . . .   "Thank you for an excellent training session. The goals, objectives and performance measures portion was invaluable to me."  . . .  "Way cheaper for better information."

Have You Ever Wondered . . . ?

How important is the "supplement not supplant" guideline?

When creating a grant proposal, especially for Federal grants, be sure to adhere to the guideline of "supplement not supplant." Funders want to provide additional services and resources, not replace existing ones. For example, a tutoring program for middle school students is a good idea, but proposing to conduct tutoring during regularly scheduled class time will destroy your chances of winning a Federal grant; and probably decrease your chances of winning any other type. In this example, it would be best to propose tutoring sessions either before or after school.

While tutoring may be identified as a need in your Need Statement (e.g. a "gap" or "weakness"), the time, place, and staffing of these tutoring sessions may be identified in the Plan of Operations section. The significance of the needs you identify and the services you plan to address them culminate within the budget.

Your budget should include line items that address the gaps and weaknesses you have identified in your Need Statement, and follow logically from your Plan of Operations. If this is done properly, then you should be supplementing and not supplanting services - but how can this be tested?

There are several ways that the Federal government will judge your grant funding's adherence to the supplement not supplant guideline. Most importantly, Federal funding may not be used for services funded by another Federal, State, or local law. Further, Federal grants will investigate whether non-Federal sources funded the proposed services during the previous year.

The bottom line is this question: what would happen if these funds were not available? If the identified needs would go unaddressed and services would not be administered, then your proposal is most likely in adherence to the supplement not supplant guideline.

For more information regarding this Federal guideline, see OMB Circular A-133 Compliance Statement or download guidance from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, found here.
