Dear Colleagues,

The Grants Information Network of NC is an informal group of professionals involved in writing grant proposals and managing grant programs. Members of the group represent government, university and college, public and private, and nonprofit agencies throughout the state. The Grants Information Network is supported by GrantProse, Inc.

The GrantProse vision is to provide high quality, personalized services and resources that are reasonably priced and widely accessible to public and private, nonprofit and for-profit, large and small organizations alike. Toward this end, we provide this newsletter free and hope you will forward it to your colleagues.

February 24, 2009. Curious about foundations, but not sure where to start? Want information on whether your organization is a good fit for statewide and local foundations? Attend the NC Foundation Fair to learn more about foundations and how they grant in North Carolina. The Fair will be held 10am-3pm at the New Bern Convention Center, New Bern, NC. There is no charge to attend this event. Please RSVP to jdunkley@ncgrantmakers.org with "Foundation Fair" in the subject line, or call (919) 933-3927.

March 16-17, 2009. GrantProse will conduct a two-day "Grant Writing for Nonprofits" workshop. This workshop is designed for nonprofit staff who have intermediate to advanced experience with writing grants. The content of the workshop builds upon the introductory program conducted twice annually by the Grants Information Network of NC. Participants will practice creating text in response to common proposal sections (e.g., problem statement, project design, management plan, evaluation plan) and budgeting varied line items. Rather than "sitting and getting," you will be writing and budgeting...bring your laptop and be prepared to have your work critiqued. Visit the GrantProse website for more information and to register.

April 9, 2009. Grants Information Network of NC meeting, 9-11 am. John Tedesco, with Big Brothers / Big Sisters will be the speaker.

June 15-16, 2009. The Grants Information Network of NC will conduct its popular two-day grant-writing workshop in coordination with Wake Tech Community College. This workshop is designed for the novice to beginning grant writer. Contact Mary Brady for information.

Tips & Resources

Wage and Salary Information
If the budget for your grant proposal requires wage and salary figures based on something other than a crystal ball, try the US Dept. of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics:
* Wages by Area and Occupation
* National Compensation Survey
* Occupational Employment Statistics

A quick look at the National Compensation Survey reveals a mean hourly wage of $17.40 for administrative assistants in state and local government agencies in the Triangle region.

About Logic Models
We have noted in the last couple of years that funding agencies, both public and private, are increasingly requiring that grant proposals include a logic model.  The W.K. Kellogg Foundation indicates that, "Basically, a logic model is a systematic and visual way to present and share your understanding of the relationship among the resources you have to operate your program, the activities you plan, and the changes or results you hope to achieve" (p. 1). Most schematics of a logic model include inputs, activities, outputs and outcomes. While inputs and activities are relatively easy to understand, the distinction between outputs and outcomes can be difficult to make.

There are many resources on the Internet to learn more about logic models. A few resources that we have found useful include:

If you know of other sources for wage and salary information and/or logic models, email newsletter editor Rita Lewis so
we can share.
