February 24, 2009. Curious about foundations, but not sure where to start?  Want information on whether your organization is a good fit for statewide and local foundations?  Attend the NC Foundation Fair to learn more about foundations and how they grant in North Carolina. The Fair will be held 10am-3pm at the New Bern Convention Center, New Bern, NC. There is no charge to for this event. Please RSVP to jdunkley@ncgrantmakers.org  with "Foundation Fair" in the subject line, or call (919) 933-3927.

March 16-17, 2009. GrantProse will conduct a two-day "Grant Writing for Nonprofits" workshop. This workshop is designed for nonprofit staff who have intermediate to advanced experience with writing grants. The content of the workshop builds upon the introductory program conducted twice annually by the Grants Information Network of NC. Participants will practice creating text in response to common proposal sections (e.g., Problem statement, Project design, Management plan, Evaluation plan), and budgeting varied line items. Rather than 'sitting and getting' you will be writing and budgeting...bring your laptop. Visit the GrantProse website for more information and to register.

Profiles

Bryan Chadwick
Bryan Chadwick is the Grants Administrator for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, ncshp.org, where he keeps busy writing grant proposals and assisting the Research and Planning Unit in other needed tasks. Recent grant awards the Highway Patrol has secured include a Community Oriented Policing Services Technology grant in the amount of $515,000 and a Governor's Crime Commission grant in the amount of $496,000 to encrypt the Mobile Data Network (MDN). These awards will help all law enforcement agencies statewide to communicate statewide and help protect the mobile data network from hackers.

Suggestions that Bryan offers for anyone seeking governmental grants are: always follow the guidelines given; don't pursue a grant that is not compatible with your organization; don't be afraid to think outside of the box.  If you are used to only pursuing specific funding sources, look at the possibility of pursuing other funding sources.

Bryan may be contacted at 919-733-5282 or brchadwick@ncshp.org.

Angela Hicks
Dr. Angela Hicks, owner of The Grant Professional, shares the following information.

In these times of economic uncertainty, increasingly people are interested in starting a non profit organization to help others. Forming a new non profit is a process that involves two distinct steps: First, file the Articles of Incorporation for nonprofit corporations with the appropriate state agency which is usually the Department of the Secretary of State. Second, file form 1023 Application for Recognition of Exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code.  Key items you will need to file form 1023 are 1) Employer Identification Number; 2) At least 3-5 board members; 3) Bylaws; 4) A 3-4 year budget; and 5) Date of incorporation from the state. Be prepared to pay a filing fee of $60 for the Articles of Incorporation and from $300 to $750 for the Application for Recognition of Exemption.
