June 28, 2012, Pier 25 North River Historic Ship Society Gala

 Author Lee Gruzen (left in the bottom photo) and maritime historian Norman Brouwer (middle in the top photo) were honored as "Historic Ship Champions" by the North River Historic Ship Society at the organization's gala that opened the four-day historic ship festival at Pier 25 in Hudson River Park. The party was held aboard the Lehigh Valley Railroad Barge No. 79 (aka the Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge), owned by David Sharps, above right in both photos. CITY OF WATER DAY: THIS SATURDAY, JULY 14 | | The Most Fun You'll Have in the City All Year The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's City of Water Day festival is a free day-long celebration of the world-class potential of the water that surrounds us and brings us together. Held at Liberty State Park in New Jersey and on Governors Island, the event draws thousands of people from throughout the metropolitan region to participate in hundreds of waterfront activities organized by MWA and its 650 Alliance Partners. FREE BOAT TOURS ALL DAY LONG ON JULY 14 | | | Next Set of Tickets to be Released on Thursday, July 12
This year, there are more than 6,000 free seats on boats participating in City of Water Day, including an Audubon Eco-Cruise aboard Circle Line Brooklyn, an Adventure Sail on the sloop Clearwater, a Hidden Harbor tour aboard a NY Waterway ferry, and more. Three-quarters of these free tickets have been claimed. The final round of tickets will be released online starting at 7pm on Thursday, July 12. Click here for more information.
If you are not able to get a ticket for a free boat tour on July 14, there are plenty of other opportunities to be at or on the water on City of Water Day. Remember that one does not need a ticket to board the free Statue Cruises ferry running between Liberty State Park and Governors Island all day. Also, a limited number of standby boat tour tickets will be available on July 14.
Dockside tours (no tickets needed) are available at four vessels: on Governors Island, the tug Urger (right), the flagship of the NY State Canal Corporation's fleet; the US Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay, a state-of-the-art icebreaker; and the Army Corps of Engineers drift collection vessel Hayward; and Tug Pegasus at Pier 25 in Hudson River Park.

More free boat rides, more children's activities, new wildlife demonstrations -- the line-up of City of Water Day events this year at the New Jersey waterfront is better than ever!
Like its counterpart on Governors Island, the City of Water Day festival at Liberty State Park runs from 10am to 4pm. A special free ferry courtesy of Statue Cruises, with live narration by tour guides, will transport people between Liberty State Park and Governors Island every half hour. A free shuttle bus courtesy of NY Waterway will offer continuous service between the Liberty State Park Light Rail Station and the entrance to the Central Rail Road of New Jersey historic terminal.
