  • The Heroes of the Harbor Awards Gala is coming up on October 6th (that's the Touch The WaterMonday after next).  If you can, please join us for this very special and unique evening.  It will be from 6 to 9 pm and will take place at Chelsea Piers.  We are thrilled to be honoring some very important waterfront heroes: Chelsea Piers, Ann Buttenwieser, Denns Suszkowski and Peggy Shepard.  There will be a boat parade off the pier, boat tours, an amazing auction and interactive displays of our issues and our Alliance partners.  All of us at MWA are working hard to make it a memorable evening for everyone.  I hope to see you there.  Call Liz Fanning at (212) 935-9831 ext. 291 for tickets.  For more details, visit www.waterfrontalliance.org

  • The 2008 Waterfront Conference is set for Thursday, November 13th at the National Museum of the American Indian.  MWA will unveil the long-awaited Waterfront Action Agenda and discuss waterfront issues of all shapes and sizes.  Please mark your calendar now for this all-day event.  Invitations will be mailed soon.  More information at www.waterfrontalliance.org.

From Landfill to Park at Fresh Kills, Staten Island
Cost: Free
Location: Meet on the taxi level of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal
Take a bus tour of Fresh Kills Park, the former landfill on Staten Island, to experience state-of-the-art ecological restoration techniques.  There will be opportunities to birdwatch with this tour. Limited to 18 people

Toxic Hazards & Cultural Treasures Tour.
Cost: $25, $25 for MAS members and students.
Peggy Shepard, winner of this year's Jane Jacobs Medal for Lifetime Achievement, will lead a bus tour highlighting issues of environmental justices in Harlem. This tour will examine how noxious hazards, such as garbage and bus depots, co-exist with some of the city's cultural treasures.

LEARN about the importance of estuaries
The Alley Pond Environmental Center, APEC, a National Environmental Study Center, situated on Little Neck Bay, is a natural and appropriate setting for the Little Neck Bay Festival. The festival, a one-day event filled with everything from boat rides to interactive displays, will celebrate the natural and cultural advantages of our own estuary.

Board the 100-ft. boat "Golden Sunshine" to learn about the history, ecology and management of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. See shorebirds, waterfowl and migrating raptors. Includes a 3-hour narrated tour plus wine & cheese, fruit, snacks.

The Last of the Summer Sunset Hidden Harbor Tours.
Cost: Children (aged 4-12): $17, Seniors & members of Working Harbor Committee: $21, and adult non-members: $29.
Location: Pier 16 at The South Street Seaport Museum, foot of Fulton Street and East River.
The Working Harbor Committee, a not-for-profit dedicated to the working waterfront of the Port of New and New Jersey, in partnership with Circle Line Downtown, has hosted this summer a series of Hidden Harbor Tours on selected Tuesdays. This is the last one of the year, this last tour will be narrated by guests from the New York Shipping Association. The tour will depart from South Street Pier 16, passes by all four of Olafur Eliasson's waterfalls in the East River, and will pass by important industry sites before returning to South Street.
