Invocation
God of heaven and earth, Father of time and eternity, You hold all that is Created in Your hands, yet You call me to Yourself. Give me the boldness to move in Your name and under Your authority in this life with Your Gospel for the sake of Him who was, who is, and who is to come; Jesus. Amen.
Reading Luke 15:11-32; Psalm 90
Reflection
When I was in eighth grade in Lutheran School, we had a school "play night" when different grades put on Biblical skits. One of the skits done by our class was "The Prodigal Son." I played the father and my best friend played the son who left home with his inheritance, and my other best friend played the son who stayed home. We did the rehearsals but never in complete costume. The night of the play, my good friend returned "home" from the "squandering" of his inheritance and his life with the pigs...when I went to greet him, I was shocked by his filthy, torn clothes...I broke out in laughter (that's what 8th graders did) when I saw him...while not intended, it ended up being a time of joy and celebration for his return. People in the audience thought we had planned that great joy and laughter to show just how excited and pleased the father was with the son's return. Remember the words, "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate." (Luke 15:20-24)
Over the past three months, there have been many times of sorrow and many times of rejoicing. I have been reassured that our Father in heaven accepts us in all our filthy, torn lives. He opens His arms to us and welcomes us in. He loves us in spite of what we have been and done. And in each experience of life, we learn and grow...we come to Him on our knees and He takes our hand and lifts us up. And all because of His grace and love...it's nothing that we have done to deserve it...the same as the "forgiven son" who felt his undeserving life fade into nothing with his father's reaction. God has richly blessed us...undeserving as we are...He certainly has my attention...He is opening doors for us to be "boots on the ground" serving others and serving Him. And this all comes during the time of Advent...a time of anticipation, a time of joy, a time for rejoicing in the coming of the Savior....indeed, it is "Joy to the World, the Lord is come." His arms are open and He has a celebration for us. We were dead and lost, but we are alive and found in the Lord. --Dr. Lou Jander, Area D Mission and Ministry Facilitator Emeritus, Texas District, LCMS
Pray (As you pray include . . . people who don't know Christ; people who will plant & witness; include people who pray. In addition, pray that the land be quenched with rain and that opportunities to bring God's love to individuals and communities impacted by the wildfires not be missed by God's servants.)
Benediction
You have heard, you have been called, you are sent. Go in the boldness of the presence of the Living God. Amen.
