Invocation
Almighty, You desire mercy. Such from You comes also the call to humility even as you chasten. Open our ears that I may understand. Open my heart that I may not become hard. Grant such understanding that will draw me more closely to Yourself. Amen.
Reading Luke 12:13-34; Psalm 49
Reflection
+ All glory to Jesus +
I'll be honest, this section of Luke slays me more than just about any other part of Scripture. If you can read it and walk away un-phased, then something is wrong with your medulla oblongata! You've probably heard it said before, but I'll say it again for emphasis: WE ARE THE RICH OF THIS WORLD. I doubt anyone reading this devotion is the exception to that statement. If you're an American citizen, with a roof over your head, a car to drive, a constantly full belly, and plenty of clothes to choose from, then you're one of the wealthiest people on the planet. There is such a vastness of wealth around us, we can easily consider ourselves "normal" or "middle class", but there's nothing normal or middle about the EXTREMELY ABUNDANT resources at our disposal.
As richly blessed people, it's important to remember that Jesus never condemns anyone for the abundance of their resources. What He does do is challenge us to see our blessings for what they really are: Tools purposely handed to us by God, to be used to extend His touch of care and to expand the Kingdom of His Savior Son. Ultimately, this section of Luke is about giving God and His rescue mission PREEMINENCE. So ask yourself, "Is the rescue mission of God the number one priority in my life? And if so, am I using the resources that God has purposefully handed me in such a manner that despondent people are getting cared for and unbelieving people are hearing the Gospel?"
If we're blatantly honest with ourselves, WAY TOO LITTLE of what God has handed us gets used for those two purposes. What needs to happen next? First, we need to sincerely repent of our sins of "resource misuse", and cling to Jesus as our perfect Savior. Then, fueled by His pardon, we zealously embrace a higher calling of being wise conduits of the resources God purposefully hands us.
May the way we manage our resources, and the way we SINCERELY LOVE putting them to work for God's Kingdom, give glory to the name above all names - Jesus Christ. His rescue mission most certainly continues.

Pray (As you pray include . . . people who don't know Christ; people who will plant & witness; include people who pray. In addition, pray that the land be quenched with rain and that opportunities to bring God's love to individuals and communities impacted by the wildfires not be missed by God's servants.)
Benediction
Go, knowing that He who calls, leads and that He who leads, provides. Amen.

Lord, As fears grow concerning local, state, and world events, make Your presence known, through Your church and through Your people in such a way that Your hand of grace would be seen calming hearts and minds ultimately drawing all people to Yourself. Amen.
