Invocation

Father, You who would listen to me more than I would talk to You, forgive me. Turn me toward You or I will not be turned.  Make true prayer pursuing Your hearts desire a priority in my life to Your glory, and to the benefit of Your kingdom.  In Jesus name.  Amen.

Reading   Luke 11:14-28Psalm 141

Reflection

"Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." (Luke 11:28)

The larger text describes the unseen reality of powers at work in the world-demonic powers and the divine work of Christ who can drive out demons.   As Heiko Oberman might describe it, "Man between God and the Devil." And yet there never is any neutrality, we are always being ridden, as Luther was wont to say, by God or the devil. That is the reality of our lives. Christ puts it, "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters" (v.23). The house swept clean cannot remain an empty house. It will be filled.

Certainly we can see here the place for Word and Prayer in our lives and the mission of the church. Baptism in and by the Spirit is to drive out the old foe but the house must be filled. So Paul, "...be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). This is the ongoing experience of the church in liturgy and life: "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10). We invite the Spirit to hover over the waters of our baptism (Genesis 2:8) and to bring "cosmos" (beauty, truth, purity) from our "chaos" (Cf. R. Cantalamessa). We know the blessing of the One who alone has the Words of Eternal Life(John 6:68) and the glorious power of His Word, "the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). O Lord, in your great mercy, do not take from us your Spirit or your Word (Psalm 51:11, Amos 5:11).
