Invocation

O Father, You who sustains Your church also protects and enlivens Your members.  Grant to me the passion to move as Your Son moved amongst those who were as sheep without a shepherd, speaking to them of hope, peace, and forgiveness.  In the name of the living and Triune God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Reading   Luke 8:26-40Psalm 81

Reflection

This narrative from Luke 8 has to be one of the spookiest in all of Scripture.  In it we find a demon possessed man living in the graveyards like a zombie, occasionally venturing out in nakedness and with broken chains hanging from his wrists to wreak terror on the inhabitants of a seaside village.  Sounds like a cheap horror flick, but make no mistake, it's very much real.

Of all the thoughts that this text conjures up, one strikes me the most. It's the fact that from the VERY FIRST MOMENT Jesus encounters this man, He is supremely eager to help him.  Read the text again and take note of the immediacy of Jesus' actions.  The text tells us that "as soon as Jesus set foot on the shore", the demons inside the man were begging for mercy, because Jesus had already commanded them to come out.  In other words, as Jesus encountered this tortured man, He didn't wait even one second to start helping him.

In the little nuances of this section of Scripture we find something huge...the very nature of the Saving God.  He is SUPREMELY EAGER to help us, even as we're horrifying, sin-enslaved people.  He is EXTREMELY CAPABLE of dealing with the scariest forms of our evil and sin, cleansing us from every bit of it, which He did on the cross.  He is OVERWHELMINGLY POWERFUL, able to address our most dire circumstances, and see us through the worst that this dark world can throw at us.

As our journey of faith and witness continues, we're going to come across a world of people who need what only the Saving God can provide.  As we introduce people to Him, we do so with a confident posture that knows He is supremely eager, extremely capable, and overwhelmingly powerful enough to be their Lord, God, and Savior.  All glory to the reigning Christ.

Rev. J. Patrick Miller, Water's Edge, Frisco, Texas
