Invocation
Gracious Father, thank You for Your call to be a witness to You. Enliven in us the hope, the desire, and the urgent witness of the first Apostles, by which we finally have come to know You, that through Jesus, others come to trust You as the way, the truth, and the life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reflection
...(Jesus) called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles... (Luke 6:13)
Are you as awestruck as I am by Jesus' 12 apostles? Maybe it's the artistic depictions of men with fiery-eyes, billowing-hair, and an almost fanatically-determined expression that made such an impression. Perhaps it's the martyrs' deaths suffered by 11 of them, or the fact that parts of the Bible were written by some of them or the simple but significant fact that Jesus himself chose them. Wow-awesome-I could never do what they did!
Of course, the fuller picture of the 12 revealed by the Scriptures shows some very ordinary men. There's Peter, the one who only seemed to open his mouth for the purpose of changing feet. Then there's Matthew, the hated tax collector. Then there's all of them, arguing about which of them would be seated on Jesus' right and his left when he came into his kingdom. Not to be forgotten, naturally, is Judas...
Perhaps if you are as overwhelmed as I am by the greatness of the 12, it is helpful to think about Jesus' choice of ordinary men to do great things for his kingdom. And if He can use ordinary men like them to do great things for his kingdom, He can use ordinary men and women like us.
We are not called to be apostles, but we are called, in the various vocations given to each of us, to give witness to the difference that Jesus has made in our lives. For He has taken us, ordinary men and women that we are-steeped in sin though we are-and made us His own. Through His death and resurrection, which we celebrate this week, He has poured out His gifts of forgiveness and eternal life upon us.
And Jesus has chosen us to be ambassadors of His love and mercy to those around us. Now that's really awe-striking!
